Book Description

The Fourth Gospel is among the most beloved and enigmatic pieces of early Christian literature. Although this Gospel has been exhaustively analyzed, portions of it remain baffling. Among its more elusive texts are the narratives describing the anointing of Jesus' feet by Mary of Bethany (Jn 12:1-8) and Jesus' resurrection appearance to Mary Magdalene (Jn 20:11-18). By demonstrating that the Song of Songs is the matrix for these narratives, this study not only resolves several puzzling details, but also opens a fresh dimension in Fourth Gospel research. The investigation largely relies on literary critical techniques and breaks important new ground in Johannine studies.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Allusion is elusive and does not yield its riches easily. Ann Winsor's A King is Bound in the Tresses proves that, with delicacy, patience, and tact, scholarship can reveal the depth of allusive echos in a text and even connect their presence with the work's social setting. Future literary or historical scholarship on the Fourth Gospel should pay attention to this work, both for its conclusions and as a model of sensitive reading." -- L. Wm. Countryman, Professor of New Testament, Church Divinity School of the Pacific, Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley; Author of The Mystical Way in the Fourth Gospel and Dirt, Greed, and Sex

"To have a carefully critical, methodologically creative study that crosses testaments is a valuable contribution to Biblical studies. Winsor's scrutiny of texts in the Song of Songs, which are evoked in the Fourth Gospel, poses new solutions to classic conundrums. It also invites readers to fresh insight about key texts that center on Biblical women--even to new possibilities of reading other texts differently." -- Barbara Green, Professor of Biblical Studies, Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology, Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley; Author of Like a Tree Planted
