I loved the "Proper Introduction to Muddy Waters" but this is even better. Four disks worth from the 1941 recordings through "Trouble No More" in excellent sound. Best takes, too. It's basically like the Chess anniversary set (1947-52) that came out a few years ago, only now including the great recordings from 1953-55. Discs 3 and 4 are just one masterpiece after the next, right up there with Armstrong or Monroe or name-your-greatest 20th century set. The songs you haven't heard are as good as the more typically anthologized. And it's cheap!

5.0 out of 5 stars oh...my...god...this is the good stuff!, November 26, 2006

just click 'buy it now' you won't be disappointed!!! an afternoons worth of the best blues music money can buy...quickly rose to the top of my playlist...great mastering, selection of material & el cheapo price...can't be beat period. (i also bought the new woody guthrie properbox 'some folk' & it's every bit as good) it's stuff like this that simply defines the two great idioms of folk 'n blues music & makes life better!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding (complete) collection, and surprisingly clear., November 7, 2007

Couldn't be happier with this 4-disc set. After losing the Disc 1 of Muddy's early work from the Chess box set, I was pleased to find this to replace it... and it's just been growing on me since. This is as much an historical record as a musical one, it seems to me I can hear developing style track-by-track.
I'm listening to it now with good headphones, on a baking hot and still day... if I shut my eyes I could be in the recording room.

For many, their introduction to Muddy Waters was through the three excellent collaborations with Johnny Winter for Blue Sky beginning in the late '70s. If you became a fan, you owe it to yourself to explore his earlier work, and this is a great place to start. For about $20.00 (about half the price of the Chess box), you get 97 songs recorded from 1941 through 1955, all nicely packaged with a very informative 43 page booklet. While the recording quality varies from session to session, overall it is quite good, and actually better than I had hoped for. Muddy makes it clear in cut after amazing cut just why he owned Chicago during this era. His band, in all its incarnations, reads like a who's who of Chicago blues legends. If you've ever wondered why Muddy's sidemen went on to earn such acclaim, listening to Little Walter, Jimmy Rogers, Walter Horton, and Otis Spann will make that clear. This is about as good as it gets. If there's a better bargain out there than this 4 cd boxed set, I've yet to see it.
