Editorial Reviews

King marks a new beginning for O.A.R., while also paying homage to their past. It is the seventh studio effort in a career that began with the band's high school recording, The Wanderer. O.A.R.'s last studio release, 2008 s All Sides, was their most successful record to date debuting at #13 on the Billboard Top 200 and featuring the Certified Platinum single "Shattered".

"When I first started writing songs I was young and hadn't experienced many things, so I chose to write from the perspective of someone else, the Wanderer," notes Marc Roberge. "Now, after having traveled the world, gotten married and had a child of my own, I felt like it was time to bring the Wanderer back and finish the stories I started over ten years ago."

With King the band blends their more traditional reggae tinged roots with new musical elements they picked up over their fifteen years performing together. The new tracks contain moments of uplift ("Gotta Be Wrong Sometimes), shimmering guitars ("The Last Time"), world beat ("Gotta Live"), populist fervor ("Fire," "Dangerous Connection"), narrative prowess ("Almost Easy") and even hip-hop ("We Made It - Interlude 1", "King")
Heaven", the record's first single, marries O.A.R.'s island-vibe with a driving beat. "I don't want to go to heaven if I can't get in," sums up the entire album's theme. Be the best version of yourself you can be, and make no apologies for it.

The Deluxe package contains 4 Bonus Tracks and a Bonus DVD, featuring two acoustic performances, as well as track by track interviews with the band and an introduction to the album King.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Album August 13, 2011
Format:Audio CD
As always, it takes a few listens of an album to truly start picking up on all it's intricacies when it comes to a band as deep as OAR. It is true that they are a jam band, but that is left for their live shows. I heard them play a few tracks off of King just three days after it launched and you can instantly tell the difference. This album is just another step in their amazing evolution as the best non-mainstream band around. Does it sound exactly like they did 15 years ago back in high school? Of course not, there will always be a place in all of their fans hearts for Wanderer and Soul's Aflame, but their new sound still screams OAR. King is both upbeat with high energy as well as contemplative about just living your life to the fullest. Give it a listen and I know you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great album. August 18, 2011
Format:Audio CD
King is polished. It's a great album. The songs feel tight and cohesive. It's great to hear a return of the wanderer! This could easily be the best O.A.R. studio album.

5.0 out of 5 stars easily their best October 16, 2011
By kev
Format:Audio CD
KING sees O.A.R. continue to mature both musically and lyrically. The album has a cohesive message about living life to the fullest and is incredibly uplifting. Marc takes simple ideas and turns them into something special ('Gotta Be Wrong Sometimes'). The fusion of short jams, radio-friendly reggae pop and interludes all come together well. Best track: 'Dangerous Connection'.

4.0 out of 5 stars More Reggae and Experimentation August 3, 2011
Format:Audio CD
There is definitely more of a reggae feel to this album. I love the opening track "King" kicking off the album. This song brings in the the new experiments of hip-hop. Chris' drumming on this one makes you think drum machine, but it is all live drums. "Taking On The World Today", "Not For You" and "Heaven" all exhibit the poppy feel to the album. "Are You Low?", "Fire", "Gotta Live" and "Dangerous Connection" all show all the huge reggae influences on this album. "Over And Over" is a quiet guitar/piano ballad different than anything on any other O.A.R. album. "Back To One" closes the album on an upbeat note...kind of ties the themes in many of the songs all together. Enjoy the bonus tracks, particularly "Heavy Heart" and "Irish Rose". The 3 minute jam at the beginning of "Give Me Something" is sick!

Overall this album is more upbeat then "All Sides" was. The lyrical content on "All Sides" was serious and the music took a bit of a too serious tone for O.A.R. With this album, the lyrical content is that same serious political, love, relationship content, but the music is much more upbeat and light-hearted. He exhibits some great song writting skills with this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Album August 3, 2011
Format:Audio CD
Groovy, upbeat... I really don't get the mediocre reviews. I love this album. So many of the songs have a great hook and the album flows nicely as it progresses. I suppose if you are the type to prefer heavy sax, this album may disappoint you, but I think it's fresh, relevant and engaging. Great for road trips, poker nights with the fellas, chillin on the patio with a nice beverage. Reminds me of so many other bands I enjoy like Rusted Root, The Bodeans, etc.

4.0 out of 5 stars O.A.R. - Always Evolving August 2, 2011
By rbt24
Format:Audio CD
The CD is good - it's different from their last album - a little more reggae feel, and a LOT more jamming in their songs with guitar solos, sax solos, etc. A great addition (and my favorite part) are the interludes where they just jam for a minute plus. Overall, a good album, and like the last few O.A.R. cds, each track seems to grow on you with each listen.

I am not a diehard O.A.R. fan with any kind of history with the band but knew enough to try this one out when it was on sale. It has been a good choice so far. Read more

If you like the O.A.R. sound this will not disappoint. A few of the instrumentals are kind of disappointing but it truly captures them at their best.

I bought this on a whim as I liked some of their older songs. I was not disappointed at all. Actually the title song is my least favorite (but I still like it).
