5.0 out of 5 stars charlie parr is the real deal !, January 29, 2006
This review is from: King Earl (Audio CD)
charlie parr is a singer/songwriter based in duluth,MN. His music is not your typical bluegrass, folk or traditional blues, rather an combination of all of these. King Earl sounds as if it could've been recorded in the Dustbowl states in the middle of the Great Depression, but it was recorded in duluth in 2004. songs like 'worried blues' and 'possessed by the devil' are absolute gems. They are gritty dirty little numbers that could easily fit into america's past, but somehow are also relevant to these modern times we live in. every song on this record is fantastic and anyone who considers themself a true fan of American music would do well to have King Earl in their collection. these lucky 13 songs are absolutely timeless! (and if you ever happen to be up north, do yourself a favor and try to see this guy live!) Charlie Parr is the real deal folks!

5.0 out of 5 stars Parr Gets His Blues On, August 24, 2007
By
Thomas Blakiston (Saint Paul, MN, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: King Earl (Audio CD)
It is a tragedy of epic proportions that Charlie Parr is not a household name among blues and bluegrass fans in the United States. From what I can tell he is the only person playing in the authentic piedmont style of Blind Willie Johnson and Rev. Gary Davis, names I don't throw around lightly. This album is a classic, and one you should pick up before it goes out of print as Parr's albums inevitably do. Parr picks and stomps his way through songs of Working Class Heroes, with lyrics seeped in whiskey, and dusty from too much time in the mine. Money-saving tip: you don't have to pay the premium for the King Earl import if you don't want to; this and several of Parr's other albums can be found at normal domestic US prices at his website (www.charlieparr.com). Pick up King Earl and don't miss Parr's latest from 2007 (Jubilee), which I think is his best to date (most tracks on "Jubilee" are accompanied by a smokin' harmonica and a washboard). "Rooster" is pretty darn good too. Very hard to go wrong with Charlie Parr.
