4.0 out of 5 stars Good game
This is a great addition to the KOF series. The graphics are great in 3D. This is not bad like the Street fighter 3d game. this is good. Its a side scroller fighter in 3d. But u can move up or down on the map by hiiiitting R. Its got 16 of the best KOF characters. Unfortunatly not Andy :(. There is a chick in place of kim, and i was happy to see Rock there also.the music...

3.0 out of 5 stars fighting for the runner up
not the worst fighting game, yet not the worst. this may very well be the maxim of the king of fighters. the game has mediocre characters and decent move sets, but nothing much more. if you like fighting games i suppose this is worth it, however make sure you pick up marvel vs capcom and pretty much all the others first.

PLaying all the ppl around the world in KOF. I would get this over DoA defintly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun Fighting in Three D Action, July 2, 2006
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: King of Fighters Maniax (Video Game)
King of Fighters is a classic side scrolling fighting game which has been updated to 3-D glory. Choose from 20 characters for fighting fun. Each character has 2 outfits to choose from. There are guys and girls, fair skinned and dark. There should be someone for everyone to enjoy playing here.

While that might seem like a lot, in the "old days" you had 30 or more characters to choose from. It almost seems like you're having to compromise here. Maybe future games will be able to handle more models in the 3D system.

While not as gorgeous as a few other fighting games out on the market, there are still many nice touches here - falling leaves, roaring waterfalls. Each character has his or her own set of moves and unique look.

The sound is pretty traditional and classic - fast paced drumming music and called out taunts, both in English and Japanese. The voice acting isn't always stellar, but heck, that's not exactly why you play a fighting game.

You can choose from story mode, mission mode or challenge mode, and ramp up and down the difficulty from 10 different settings to really tweak the game to match your skill set.

If you're a fan of the King of Fighters series, this is definitely one to get your hands on. If you've never played the King of Fighters series before, it might be time to give this a try.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's KOF, it's unique, it works, February 23, 2006

I'm not a KOF newbie but this game kicked my butt the first time I loaded it up. To me, that's a testament to its unique blend of 2d and 3d fighting. The characters have all the same moves from the 2d KOF games, but in this one they also have fast string combos like in Tekken or DOA. It makes for a fighting experience unlike any pure 2d or 3d fighter. It's a jack of both trades if not a master of either. The 3d graphics aren't jaw-dropping like DOA but quite solid.

Online play is much smoother than any of the Capcom fighters on Xbox Live (Street Fighter Anniversary or Capcom v. SNK 2). The only drawback is that there are seldom any other people playing this game online.

There's only 20 characters (6 of which are new), which is a very small roster for KOF but still bigger than DOA 3 or Soulcalibur 2. For the first time in KOF the characters have English voices in addition to their regular Japanese. The English wasn't well produced, though, and the lip movements only synch to the Japanese voice tracks. It's really more of a novelty than added depth.
Other minor drawbacks include limited offline play modes and ridiculously gratuitous "jiggle factor."

That being said, this is a game worth getting. It's a cool fighting experience that no other game has yet managed to deliver.

4.0 out of 5 stars A different King of Fighters, August 24, 2007

This is a surprisingly good spinoff from the King of Fighters franchise. The series has been updated to 3D now, and features 20 fighters with lots of old favourites and some new faces. The fighting is still mostly 2D, but certain special moves and throws will you toss you about the 3D arenas. Gameplay is fast and responsive, graphics are above-average; it's not as slick as true 3D fighters like Soul Caliber and Dead or Alive, but it's no eyesore either. The somewhat average soundtrack is saved by the ability to listen to the Japanese vocals for the characters. And on the xbox version, you can take the fighting online.

If you're looking for a true representation of the KoF series, it's still best to go with any of the 2D incarnations (like Neowave or the 2002/2003 package). This game lacks the 3-on-3 mode that has been a trademark of the series, and the graphic effects, however pretty they are, can't match the slick, hand-drawn sprite animations from before. Otherwise KoF fans should definitely check this out, and it's at least a definite rental for fans of the genre.
