3.0 out of 5 stars Formulaic, January 25, 2009
This review is from: King of Kings (Audio CD)
I bought this album believing it was done by a Somalian roots reggae band. As it turns out, this group is from Toronto. That is okay. Always nice to hear some tunes from our northern neighbors. However, this band is so formulaic that I could almost predict the next lyric. I have listened to enough good reggae to know that Rastas believe that Haille Selassie is god. Fine. I, and many Ethiopian friends of mine beg to differ. The song writing follows the tried and true formula of Rasta ideology without any passion or wit whatsoever. Talk about phoning it in!
The musicianship is, however quite good except for the fact that the lead male singer cannot carry a tune. He goes in and out of key so often that it ruins the otherwise competant playing of the band. And, even though the players of insruments play well, there is nothing special here.
I think there is so much good roots reggae out there that is far supiorior to this album that money would be more wisely spent elsewhere. If you are a fan of the roots sound, you surely have something better than this album in you music collection already
