I remember a few years ago when I read an early draft of King Mertagon's Box. Here was a girl, Nari, who against the odds and at the cost of bruises to herself, fought to protect helpless kittens from attack by brutal boys. I so admired her strength, and I also could feel the ache of a young woman who never knew her mother or father. I wanted to know her, to follow her on this adventure, and to be a part of her discovering herself.

As the father of the author, Rebecca Ann Wilkes, I don't pretend to be unbiased. I'd almost certainly give the book 5 stars... just because. ;-) Dad's do that. And it's okay.

That disclosed, I'll also say that this is MY KIND OF BOOK. Rebecca has brought together solid characters that I can relate to... and she's given them a journey of self-discovery where inner guidance and following a vision are what lead the characters forward. Friendships are formed, and trustworthiness is discovered even in the least likely of people.

And there are horses! Including one that bites...

If this type of adventure story appeals to you, I recommend you get King Mertagon's Box and join Nari and Alan on their quest.

Great Book! January 30, 2012

I have to say that the main reason that I bought this book was because I know the author. That said, I feel that I would have really missed out if I wouldn't have bought it. The characters are completely relatable even though their world is so different than ours. Sometimes the characters do everything right and sometimes they make huge mistakes, just like us. I don't feel like I do with some books that the "good guys" are always perfect angels and the "bad guys" are always completely evil. There are some gray areas and room for the characters to change, which I like. The plot line is well developed and the setting keeps your imagination on overload. Overall, I think that this book was a great read and I would recomend it to anyone.
