5.0 out of 5 stars The heart of the true bajacaliforniano is depicted here., January 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: King of the Moon: A Novel of Baja California (Hardcover)
No other book about Baja California has ever eaten into my soul as Gene Kira's "King of the Moon." I have known and traveled throughout Baja for many, many years. I saw these people. I spoke to them. Through this book, Kira has brought composites of all of the people of this remarkable Mexican peninsula.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Treasure!, July 22, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: King of the Moon: A Novel of Baja California (Hardcover)
What a find! King of the Moon is that rare book with the power to change lives. This haunting and often harrowing story of life in a Baja fishing village is packed with intense imagery and colorful characters. This book is so satisfying I didn't want it to end. (I struggled to pace my reading to make the experience last longer.) It's a beautiful and bittersweet story written with consummate skill and filled with profound insight into the human condition. A treasure.

I came upon this book by accident and have recommended it highly. It has all the flavor of John Steinbeck, a powerful set of characters and a fine story line with humor and pathos. I hope Mr. Kira writes some more fiction for us to appreciate.

I loved, I laughed, I cried! This book truly captures the magic of the baja, and the special people who call it home or a home away from. I highly recommend it to anyone in love with this special "last best place".

5.0 out of 5 stars More than a Pearl!, June 23, 1998
This review is from: King of the Moon: A Novel of Baja California (Hardcover)
This marvelous novel is a lot more than a "book about Baja California". It is a rare invitation to join a village of fascinating characters you will never forget. Mr. Kira reveals an astounding ability to understand and empathize with the inhabitants of a desert fishing village by the Sea of Cortez, seemingly isolated, but still vulnerable to forces from the "outside". This is an important book of intriguing complexity. There are moments true magic; there are times when you will want to laugh out loud or be silenced by sadness. We have spent some time in Baja and we can assure you that this book is right on the mark. Mr Kira knows what he is writing about. This is not a book to be missed!

5.0 out of 5 stars A positive review, June 17, 1998
This review is from: King of the Moon: A Novel of Baja California (Hardcover)
Gene Kira's "King of the Moon" is one of the best fictional books on Baja to be published in my lifetime. The characters jump off the page to give you a vivid feel for the country and its people as they accept what the land and life gives them and struggle to make the best of what they are given. You will begin to understand why there are people like myself who have come to love the country and its stoic, warm-hearted people. For a real insight into Baja, try "King of the Moon".....Gary Graham, Baja on the Fly.

In "King of the Moon", Gene Kira has given us a real insight into mexican life on the Sea of Cortez. He has obviously experienced the wonderfully courageous Baja lifestyle first-hand.

A MUST READ for anyone who loves Baja!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best read, December 21, 2011
This review is from: King of the Moon: A Novel of Baja California (Hardcover)
This may not be the "best" book I've ever read, but it certainly is my favorite. I read it over and over - whenever I want to feel good about the world. I've been to Agua Verde several times and can't wait to go back, sit on the beach in the cove there, and read it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars King of the Moon, August 28, 2009
This review is from: King of the Moon: A Novel of Baja California (Hardcover)
This is one of the best books that I have read in years. King of the Moon captures BAJA, Sea of Cortez and the exceedingly interesting characters in a fun, factual and fascinating visual of a period from World War Two through the late 1970's.
King of the Moon reminds the reader of the beauty and fragility of this incredible world and all beings in it. If you are into fishing, exploring or just kicking back with a wonderful book, King of the Moon is a must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something about this cover..., October 9, 1999
This review is from: King of the Moon: A Novel of Baja California (Hardcover)
I can feel the warmth of that rising sun everytime I look at the scene on this cover [we use it as our screensaver]. I'm sure I've been to this place. Just as this cover scene will rekindle memories for Baja travelers, this story is so vivid you may later try to recall if these were people you've actually met, places you've been yourself, and maybe even that chubasco you went through back in 19[??]!
