Editorial Reviews

King of the Beach, the new Wavves album is an adventurous and ambitious record. It cuts deeper into the bleeding throat zatharsis and '60s sunshine soul that Wavves is known for. It also unexpectedly flips out with elements of primitive electronics and psychedelic studio experimentation. Unlike Wavves' previously released material, recorded in I haphazard bursts on Williams' laptop, King of the Beach was toiled over for three months at Sweet Tea Recording, a world-renowned studio in Oxford, Mississippi. Sweet Tea is also the home of Dennis Herring, producer of the last two Modest Mouse albums, and the man who dismantled and re-assembled the sound on this record.

Biography

Straight from the dungeons of L.A., Wavves are releasing Afraid Of Heights, their fourth album and first on the Mom + Pop and Warner Bros. labels. Now a duo consisting of guitarist Nathan Williams and bassist Stephen Pope, they sound bigger, brasher, and shockingly more professional than ever on Afraid Of Heights which positions the band to take their rightful place amongst the pop-punk gods. ... "King of the Beach" is like the Beach Boys, the Shins' "Oh, Inverted World" and Surfer Blood's debut album wrapped up into one highly addictive package. The Wavves early work consists of largely inaccessible (though definitely worth checking out) recordings free of any fancy production equipment. This album peels away the noisy layers and broadens the vision, allowing more of us humble listeners to participate in the ongoing dance of musical innovation.

I won't spend a ton of time here but I have liked Wavves sound since the first time I heard them. I have a soft spot for the surf aesthetic and I love fuzzed out guitars, so Wavves was ahead of the game with me right away.
The first album had moments that really caught your ear but the were fleeting. Even the best sprouts didn't quite grow to maturity. This time they are bearing fruit...While there is still room for improvement, there are still dead spots, King of the Beach is an album rather than a sketch.

This is one of those albums that just doesn't get old no matter how much you play it. By far Wavves best work and great introduction to the rest of their discography.

The little envelope that holds it is kind of cheap,
but the record is pretty nice overall. you get your moneys worth.

I'm pissing off my wife and friends because I won't stop playing this album over and over and over. If you like: Dead Milkmen, Pixies, Shins, Beach Boys, 80's pop punk and surf rock, then you need to buy this album.

Even when I'm not listening to the album, it's playing in my head. I love it.

I really love this band. I hope to see them live. They remind me of older bands, but they definitely do their own thing. Refreshing! Give them a try!

Wavves is just the best. Buy this record, you will see why. For some reason, I find myself playing convertible balloon all the time. Green Eyes is also a great track. King of the BEACCCCCCCH!!!
