Without it, an outsider cannot begin to appreciate or understand the King Ranch. I read both volumes in days.

I'm from the Kingsville area and have always enjoyed local history. I read this set 40 years ago and had been wanting it for my personal library. This was a great opportunity to help a charity and get something I had been wanting for a long time. The condition was not as important to me as it is to some since I wasn't buying it as a collector's item - I just wanted a set of my own to read, review and enjoy. For that, it's perfect!

I happened on this two volume set in my grandparents' library and read them in one sitting. So much history about a family that has had a lasting influence in the ranching business. I especially liked the development of the Santa Gertrudis cattle breed, range grasses and King Ranch quarter horses.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful By David Carlyle on October 9, 2013
Format: Hardcover
The King Ranch, by Tom Lea, is an account of the ranch from 1885 just after the death of Captain King, the founder, until 1953, the hundredth birthday of the enterprise. The ranch is huge when Captain King dies, around a half million acres, later expands beyond Texas and even beyond the United States, into Australia, Cuba and Brazil by 1953, and expands into more businesses and places by today. The book has 33 pages of index and almost 90 pages of appendices.

Lea explains that Robert Kleberg marries Alice King, daughter of the Captain, to join the two families, and then describes, in tedious detail, how the Klebergs build the ranch to its 1953 state. The account is interesting, especially to former Texas residents like me, but is more history than story. So I stick with my rule of no more than four stars for a history book. David Carlyle, "Another Land."

What can I say about Tom Lea other than these two volumes hold a prominent place on my mantle. I could not put down. Love love love these books.
