Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Trapped shoveling dung on his parents Moog farm, it’s no wonder that six-year-old Rex dreams of becoming the king of space. The big surprise here is that, after building a warbot for a school project, he actually manages to conquer the universe . . . unbeknownst to his parents, of course. Eventually, however, the Galactic Alliance tracks Rex down and, even with his dung-blasting robot, the little fellow must relinquish his position and return home. Dreamer Rex, who is often in trouble at school, burdened by chores, and always ready for some action, will prove very familiar to many children. Adding appeal is Duddle’s art, which has the glossy sensibility of modern animation and brims over with fantastic retro robots, spaceships, and weapons. Although a few lines of text seem targeted toward parents as much as their kids, this could prove to be a new favorite among young children on the lookout for sf action and humor. Grades 1-3. --Jesse Karp

While I LOVE Jonny Duddle as an illustrator, I feel his stories get very dense and need to be aired-out a bit before he begins.
This title exemplifies that more than his others. It's almost as if he has a story to tell over 100 pages and his publisher comes back and says he can only have 50, so he ends up shoe-horning so much making for an exhausting reading experience. While it's ridiculous to say it's the worst kids book ever, as another reviewer here does, I think Duddle's books would be considered in greater regard if he had a strong story editor to assist him in polishing up the ideas before inking.

Got this book from the library. My son loved it so much ( so did our entire family) that he did not want to return it. We ended up renewing it 6 times. Now it is time to purchase it :) . Great story, fun reading, super illustration. Absolutely love it.

…not so much with the story.
Jonny Duddle is an amazing illustrator but I think he would benefit from a collaboration with a writer. Great idea for a book though and I love, love, love the illustrations.
Hoo-ray for Jonny Duddle art!

This was the first Jonny Duddle book we got for our son, but we have looked up the others because we loved the creativity of the book. It's a memorable story and already one of his favorites after the first read!

This book is great. The quality of the book itself is great. The story is real cute and the illustrations are amazing.
