4.0 out of 5 stars SUPERB MUSICAL TREAT!, February 13, 2001
This review is from: King Swings (Audio CD)
SUPERB! I recently re-discovered Nat King Cole after listening to a duet "Open Up The Dog House (Two Cats Are Coming In)" on the Dean Martin Capital Years CD. That was reason enough to further delve into the world of "Nat". Add to that his minstrel performance in "CAT BALLOU" and you get the picture. This CD won't disappoint. The songs in this selection provide a wide range of swing variations to enjoy. My particular favorite is an early one "But She's My Buddy's Chick". This CD reminds us of just how good music used to be, and just how commercial and temporary it has become. This is well worth buying!

5.0 out of 5 stars "3rd Songbook Series during the Capitol Years ~ Nat Cole", January 14, 2005
This review is from: King Swings (Audio CD)
Capitol Records continues the Nat King Cole "Songbook Series" with another volume "The King Swings", this the third to spotlight the tremendous output of recordings from the early days of the trio...leading up to his successful solo years with Billy May, Nelson Riddle, Neal Hefti, Dave Cavanaugh and the best of all the Count Basie Orchestra...there is even one with George Shearing.

Among the highlights "BUT SHE'S MY BUDDY'S CHICK", one of his first for the Capitol label, "TANGERINE", a wonderful tune from Johnny Mercer that keeps your adrenaline going, "TEACH ME TONIGHT", a terrific arrangement by Billy May that instantly became a classic, "WELCOME TO THE CLUB", "THE LATE, LATE SHOW" and "I WANT A LITTLE GIRL", all three by the best swing band ever to come along, the Count Basie Orchestra, my all time favorite...each track emphasized on the swing era, Nat completely takes charge and you're in for a real treat.

Hats off to Carole Cole and Paul Atkinson for this one of a kind compilation of the past recordings that will keep you swingin' and completely satisfied...Nat had a tenderness in his voice, completely flawless...he could never deliver a bad tune...his style and signature of making a song his own has never been duplicated...within this album are timeless songs and remain classics, while others are songs that have never seen the light of day...the sound quality of this album is 24-Bit Digitally Remastered...this release is a dream come true...more selections from the greatest entertainer of our time!

Nat was awarded a posthumous plaque to the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame, naming him one of the major early influences on rock 'n' roll...they'll never be another pass this way again...thank you Captiol and Carole Cole for this release of Nat "King" Cole during his swing years and the decades of music that followed...his songs will remain with us always and forever...just the way we like 'em!

Total Time: 54:21 on 18 Tracks ~ Capitol Records 530302 ~ (1/23/2001)
