This book is a joy, a treasure. The last story is a symphony. I can see the whole adventure clearly in my mind's eye, for the telling is so true. I have recommended this book, available through Amazon, and all Millhauser books to many who agree. I think this author is the most imaginative author I have ever experienced. I wait eagerly for any of his writings to appear.

This review is from: The King in the Tree (Paperback)
Millhauser is known for delving into the fantastic, for his exhaustive detail, but I think he has a bit more range than that. In addition to his strong sense of wonder, there is a wise, subtle knowledge of the human heart and the difficulties and mysteries of relationships. The last two stories, that are based on two very old stories (Don Juan and Tristam and Isolde), seamlessly added a level of "modern" psychology to these old tales... Anyway, I liked it very much, and feel Millhauser deserves much more recognition for his wonderful body of work.
