5.0 out of 5 stars A true classic every dub fan should have
I first heard the title track "King Tubby meets the rockers uptown" on a pal's compilation. I was searching for the album for 2 years all over Germany 'til I found it @amazon.com !!! Anyway, now that I own it I know what I have missed through these years. The title track I think gave good birth to today's Drum & Bass / Breakbeats music (just hear the drum...

2.0 out of 5 stars Highly overated
This is a very boring album, compared to any of the spaced-out creative dub from Lee Perry. Go to sleep, and wonder at how many time a phase shifter can be used boringly. Sleep weak.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true classic every dub fan should have, July 29, 1999
This review is from: King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown (Audio CD)
I first heard the title track "King Tubby meets the rockers uptown" on a pal's compilation. I was searching for the album for 2 years all over Germany 'til I found it @amazon.com !!! Anyway, now that I own it I know what I have missed through these years. The title track I think gave good birth to today's Drum & Bass / Breakbeats music (just hear the drum rolls and the sound of the drums). This CD is a must-have for everyone who appreciates Reggae/Dub music. The most influential music up-to-date. Never has a music style had a greater impact on todays club and dance music. For me, Dub is perfectly it.

5.0 out of 5 stars the original, September 14, 2000

Without question the most important lp of dub stylings ever made. Mixing the amazing King Tubby's groundbreaking engineering style with the incredible simplicity of Pablo's melodica and the tight grooves of the Rockers was a match that Jah made on the 6th day prior to resting, rolling up some herb and smoking it on the 7th. If He wishes to hear dub on the 7th day, then Tubby et al would likely be His choice.

Dub was a very important movement that is still in full force in dance clubs from Kingston to all points across the globe. Whether in reggae clubs or in modern electronica (I spin electronica- drum n' bass, house, breakbeats, jungle, etc, and I ALWAYS mix in Tubby or "Scratch" Perry into my sets- ALWAYS... the fresh innovations of Dub, and this lp in particular, will keep the dancefloor moving.

A most important lp.. I and I love it. Praise be to Jah.

5.0 out of 5 stars this is it, January 21, 2000

this is the one! If you get one dub album, get this one, if you want to get into dub, get this one, if you like dub, get this one, if you dont like dub, get this one. King Tubby at the controls, Augustus Pablo at the keys and melodica, the Rockers on the rhythms, it doesn't get any better than this. With plenty of minor key progressions (none of that 'happy' dub), floating vocals and horns, and rolling beats, this album is killer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, but the Deluxe version is better, June 17, 2004

I have the deluxe version, which has four more tracks. These four tracks include two of my personal favourites. Since most places (including amazon) offer the deluxe and regular versions of the album for the same price, why not get the extra four tracks? If you want my rating on this version as it stands it would be a five star rating for sure, but I gave it four because there really isnt a reason not to buy the deluxe version instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite possibly the best dub album ever, July 14, 2000
This review is from: King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown (Audio CD)
A spacey, trippy masterpiece. King Tubby's innnovative, outrageous production work is second to none (sorry, Scratch) and really shines on this disc. Augustus' melodica work will amaze; while the instrument, a plastic flute/keyboard, is little more than a quirky toy, Augustus somehow manages to evoke magic from it, a dreamy, trancey soundscape over the room-shaking, super-heavy dub backbeat. A perfect introduction to dub for the novice, a vital disc for the fan.

This album is amazing. I had heard it on obscure radio stations, not many play reggae, not good reggae, and I was impressed!! Get it and you'll see.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential dub, January 7, 2004

You can't find a better pairing...King Tubby at the boards and the Rockers supplying the riddims. Music wouldn't be the same without the sounds found in this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars King Tubby and Augustus team up for an outstanding album...., May 7, 2002

Don't let yourself be fooled by previous reviews which clearly show how little these individuals know about exceptional dub reggae music. This album is by many considered an underated classic, in which King Tubby shows why he is truly the king of Dub, being backed up by the one and only Augustus bringing amazing soft melodies, perfect for meditation and cool sessions. A 70's album in which both artists were at the start of thier careers showing the true pure reggae music that could only be found at that time, and that many try to imitate today, but they just cannot match it. Buy it and enjoy it............

5.0 out of 5 stars Dub Evolution, February 29, 2004
By
"plum_village" (Border to Border) - See all my reviews
This review is from: King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown (Audio CD)
Think King Tubby should be credited more on this CD; credits were not clear to me; but that is no big drawback, this is 5 star; "This is Augustus Pablo" though, is probably a safer bet, better release however.

Augustus Pablos instrument, the melodica; is sort of like a piano and flute combined, bring up, what some might call a middle eastern sound: One won't be dissapointed; on the straight and narrow path, songs with lyrics, known names, Bob Marley, etc. is a safer bet; but apparently, this disc has historical significance and Augustus is a splendid artist with his flute. It might make one think, of the pyramids and palm trees, Robbie Shakespeare and others appear on this disc.

If you are in the mood for lyricless reggae, a legend, dub evolution, try this.

A lot more reviews here, I moved my review from the deluxe edition over here as well.
