The Danish mini-series that made me pay attention to Lars Von Trier in the first place.,
By
This review is from: The Kingdom (IMPORT) Original Danish with English Subtitles (DVD)
The copy on the double VHS box set of the Kingdom stated "like ER on acid" which wasn't inaccurate although a bit of a dumbed-down marketing phrase for the U.S. audience.
The only real comparison to "ER" is that the film takes place in a hospital and sometimes uses a shaky faux-realism cinematic style. The film doesn't embrace the idea that every viewer is an idiot and that every five minutes we need to see something shocking or else we will leave. A good part of the movie establishes the quirky characters and how they are involved in various subplots that have nothing to do with the "horror" aspect of the story, Unlike most directors from 1940 forward, he does not kill the story with gratuitous foreshadowing. We are given some insights from the two people least expected to have them. Von Trier manages to pull it all together in the second half of the film. As things get scarier they don't seem less real. I refuse to give any details or spoilers in this review. It is simply a must watch for anyone with a functioning brain. Don't be swayed by the crappy US version "Kingdom Hospital," the real deal is Hitchcock if he was born in Denmark.

Brilliant and Intriging,
By PIERROT LE FOU "LE FOU" (Mexico City, Mexico) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Kingdom (IMPORT) Original Danish with English Subtitles (DVD)
One of the most intelligent ghost stories ever done, funny and satiric characters build up a story which couldn't be more amazing and revealed clues in such a way. Medicine fanatics will find it even more interesting but anyway anybody could say it is done with such justifucations, it can hardly be seen as not realistic. Lars Von Trier again surpasses as a genius.
