Book Description

983560035X 978-9835600357 July 15, 1999
This book is the first detailed analysis of royal authority in the central Sumatran kingdom of Minangkabau between the seventeenth and the nineteenth centuries. It examines the language of kingship and the practice of royal signs in Sumatra. Authoritative works, it is argued, were a crucial source of empowerment to local communities in a period of change and external challenge.

Editorial Reviews

Review

`Drakard has explored the depths of the contradictory perceptions not only of power and authority, but indeed of reality between the "enlightened" Western thought of the Dutch officials and traders and the worldviews of the diverse peoples in the Indies. She has succeeded in illuminating this other reality as it may well have existed in West Sumatra ... We are indebted to Drakard for her ability to recapture it' Audrey Kahin, Indonesia 71 (April 2001)
