Amalur: a New RPG Realm with an Proven Pedigree

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning takes place in Amalur, an all-new game universe inhabited by various races of beings and filled with thousands of years of history. This deep fantasy based world is the brainchild of best-selling Fantasy and Science Fiction author R.A. Salvatore and the combined talents of Todd McFarlane, the creator of the Spawn series, Ken Rolston, the lead designer of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and the team at Big Huge Games. Reckoning bears the hallmarks of each of these visionaries, melding an epic, master-crafted storyline, rich graphics and heart-stopping animations, and compelling open-world exploration. Gameplay

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is a single player Action RPG that blends a new approach to character development with intuitive, yet challenging real-time combat. Characters enter the game as something of a blank slate after they are resurrected from death by the mysterious "Well of Souls" following a grand in-game conflict. Spurning the rigid character class systems commonly used in RPGs for the development of characters, the game instead focuses on player-shaped "destines" which hinge on the chosen combinations of abilities and equipped items and weapons attached to their character as the game progresses. With no traditional classes these are blended as the play wishes. This along with a large item inventory limit and a robust crafting system for creating new items, allows for a nearly limitless number of possible character paths, or destines.

Active combat plays a major role in the game as players explore the Open World environment of the game on quests that bring them into contact with all manner of creatures. Regardless of character paths, all characters have access to primary and secondary weapons as well as magic. Unique attacks are tied to your choice of weapons, armor and strategies. The game also features powerful slow-motion attack opportunities called "Fateshift Kills" triggered by specific situations and/or equipped items. These devastating attacks are measured out as players time moves to a separate "Fate Energy" power meter. Additional features include unscripted real-time battles against large-scale enemies, melee and ranged weapons and enemy tagging abilities for ranged or delayed attacks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Preloaded and ready to go on the 7th February 4, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
This is my review of the download version. There are issues for all downloads and installing on Origin, but there is a fix:
Download the pre-load and open the folder. Inside is a "reckoning.zip" file.
First, close Origin.
Create a folder called "Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning" inside the folder Origin downloads your games to.
Unzip the contents of "reckoning.zip" to that folder and then open Origin.
Origin should list the game as "ready to install"
Install the game, and wait for the 7th.

The fix worked great for me and I'm all set to go. It takes a few more steps, but Origin is the problem, not Amazon.

Once you activate the game, the Devs stated you DO NOT need to have Origin running to play it. Just for the first time activation and verification of release date.

1.0 out of 5 stars So Mad April 13, 2012
By Oxelao
This is ridiculous, I downloaded this game which took 4 hours through Amazon, just so it would install Origin and then I had to re-download the whole game for another 3 hours. Just completely and utterly pointless.

2.0 out of 5 stars I expected too much. February 10, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
I feel like I have been hoodwinked. I played the demo and found the graphics to be grainy and jerky, the npc conversations to be wooden and lacking any real personality. The lack of key binding and the obvious poor console porting to pc bothered me as well. I went on to the community forums about my concerns, and I was assured by a moderator that everything would look better and be polished on the retail release, and most importantly, I would be able to key bind.

I bought the retail version and mostly the grainy and choppy graphics were fixed, and it was beautiful to look at, and the combat was potentially smooth, except that you CAN NOT KEY BIND THE MOVEMENT OR ATTACKS THE TWO MOST IMPORTANT KEYBINDS YOU COULD POSSIBLY DO. They are liars and frauds.

The npc conversations in general have stayed wooden and the characters bland. Some npcs that have nothing to do with your story are more interesting than the main story
npcs. That chat boxes take you back to the 80s, and only certain cut scenes on the main story are any different. This is pathetic. I am an avid RA Salvatore fan and really had some hope for this game, but on a pc it is a bust. If I get around to getting an xbox controller for my pc, maybe ill come back to it, but basically I got ripped off for 51 bucks.

Has anyone successfully installed and activated Amalur using the Amazon...
Agreed... don't waste your time downloading from the amazon service since Origin forces you to re-download the game. Dislike how so many companies are creating their own proprietary launchers now *sigh*
