Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is a single player Action RPG that blends a new approach to character development with intuitive, yet challenging real-time combat. Characters enter the game as something of a blank slate after they are resurrected from death by the mysterious "Well of Souls" following a grand in-game conflict. Spurning the rigid character class systems commonly used in RPGs for the development of characters, the game instead focuses on player-shaped "destines" which hinge on the chosen combinations of abilities and equipped items and weapons attached to their character as the game progresses. With no traditional classes these are blended as the play wishes. This along with a large item inventory limit and a robust crafting system for creating new items, allows for a nearly limitless number of possible character paths, or destines.

Active combat plays a major role in the game as players explore the Open World environment of the game on quests that bring them into contact with all manner of creatures. Regardless of character paths, all characters have access to primary and secondary weapons as well as magic. Unique attacks are tied to your choice of weapons, armor and strategies. The game also features powerful slow-motion attack opportunities called "Fateshift Kills" triggered by specific situations and/or equipped items. These devastating attacks are measured out as players time moves to a separate "Fate Energy" power meter. Additional features include unscripted real-time battles against large-scale enemies, melee and ranged weapons and enemy tagging abilities for ranged or delayed attacks.

This is my review of the download version. There are issues for all downloads and installing on Origin, but there is a fix:
Download the pre-load and open the folder. Inside is a "" file.
First, close Origin.
Create a folder called "Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning" inside the folder Origin downloads your games to.
Unzip the contents of "" to that folder and then open Origin.
Origin should list the game as "ready to install"
Install the game, and wait for the 7th.

The fix worked great for me and I'm all set to go. It takes a few more steps, but Origin is the problem, not Amazon.

Once you activate the game, the Devs stated you DO NOT need to have Origin running to play it. Just for the first time activation and verification of release date.

I feel like I have been hoodwinked. I played the demo and found the graphics to be grainy and jerky, the npc conversations to be wooden and lacking any real personality. The lack of key binding and the obvious poor console porting to pc bothered me as well. I went on to the community forums about my concerns, and I was assured by a moderator that everything would look better and be polished on the retail release, and most importantly, I would be able to key bind.

I bought the retail version and mostly the grainy and choppy graphics were fixed, and it was beautiful to look at, and the combat was potentially smooth, except that you CAN NOT KEY BIND THE MOVEMENT OR ATTACKS THE TWO MOST IMPORTANT KEYBINDS YOU COULD POSSIBLY DO. They are liars and frauds.

The npc conversations in general have stayed wooden and the characters bland. Some npcs that have nothing to do with your story are more interesting than the main story
npcs. That chat boxes take you back to the 80s, and only certain cut scenes on the main story are any different. This is pathetic. I am an avid RA Salvatore fan and really had some hope for this game, but on a pc it is a bust. If I get around to getting an xbox controller for my pc, maybe ill come back to it, but basically I got ripped off for 51 bucks.

Great game, played through the main quest lines and had a good 100+ hours of game play; this is also taking into account I skipped the chat always. The game is great graphically it gets a 9 out of 10. Were it falls short is in the simple mechanics of games. No camera adjust, glitchy battles and to many wth is the camera man smoking. This along with the sheer depth a RPG should have. I hate to say it it but, when a lot of folks go to buy a game they instantly compare it to Elder Scrolls; even though the game is older than the last John Madden Title for PC. The game is for the candy straw crowd, the twitter junkies and the Facebook jockey. Eye candy with no jock strap to support the jewels of what should be an EPIC game. I would no waste the $60, and then the $5 for gear and now $10 for expansion, honestly. If I would not had bought it on Amazon I would feel slightly robbed. Some late game glitches along with no true in depth RPG story made my ending a shame. Had issues like most if you read the forums (which I RECOMMEND before you buy)had 4 game saves disappear, not a lvl 1 or 2 but after final battle and then some.

Its really a hyped up player made to just pwn all within its grasp at any given time, with no AI or Story line to stop you. If you want to pwn bad AI and walk around like you own, what is already yours anyway; then this game is for you! Another slap in the face was the announcement of the MMO version coming soon, with no patch in sight for the MULTITUDE of game balance, combat camera issues. Its a half gallon of cotton candy when you want to ride the Roller Coaster!

This is ridiculous, I downloaded this game which took 4 hours through Amazon, just so it would install Origin and then I had to re-download the whole game for another 3 hours. Just completely and utterly pointless.

Love this game, so much to do being so many quests! The graphics are amazing and colorful and has a celtic feel to it! Alot of different creatures you confront on your quests. Love that it's not to hard and I don't get stuck repeating a battle over and over! Alot of different weapons and armor you can use, switch or sell. It is so much fun can't wait to play it when I get home from work. I hope there are going to be alot of dlc's I will get them for sure. One more positive note there where no technical problems game runs great!

I played the demo (which to be honest was a bit buggy) and really liked it. The combat is very fun and can be challenging as well. I really like the destiny skill system, which has saved me some aggravation by allowing the opportunity to change my skills in order to accomplish some goals. So far I've only had one quest go south on me, so I think overall this is a fairly well thought out and implemented piece of software. If you like rpg's and great combat, I think you'll find KoA: R a worthwhile purchase.

I'm writing this review for two purposes.

The first is to rate my experience with the demo, which was excellent. The game is well-paced, immersive, very superbly drawn, and even in its incomplete form had extremely compelling gameplay. The Final Version promises to be improved from the already excellent demo, as the demo was apparently drawn from a non-complete version of the game.

The second purpose is to address the problems people are having with downloading and playing. Firstly, pre-order does not entitle you to run the game early, it only allows you download and ready the game for installation. Secondly, if you redeem the product keys within Origin itself, the game will automatically download and install without any issues. From there, it will not play until the release date checker indicates that the release date has come and gone. Unfortunately, this is a misleading situation, since Amazon also allows you to redundantly download the game through their servers. The far easier option is to simply allow Origin to run the entire process for you.

Upon purchase, Amazon will also indicate that you have unlimited downloads on any computers you own, since Origin is only required for first-run activation.

EDIT: I also should add that this pre-order activates at 3:00 AM on the East Coast. They wait until it's released across America for the pre-order release date check to work. It isn't great, but it's an EA flub that's not related to the game, so I haven't allowed it to affect my review (since it'll be moot at this time tomorrow, but might be useful to anyone checking out this page to pre-order and play at midnight).
