I discovered this cd via a local news broadcast in Sacramento, CA, and purchased it because I like the genre and the performers are connected with Cal State University, Sacramento. This recording was nominated for a Grammy this year. The vocals are soaring and emotionally compelling, notwithstanding my limited non-English vocabulary. The instrumental work on classical guitar and supporting instruments is a wonderful blend of great technical prowess and amazing emotional involvement. The quality of the recording is also excellent, with none of the compressed, "canned" quality that characterizes most modern recordings. Highly recommended.

This is just a superb collection of beautifully engaging music, sung by people who combine both natural talent and what is obviously a highly developed empathy for the genre. These performances ring authentic, and it's easy to imagine that this particular consort of musicians would have been called back to the courts of royalty again and again. "The Kingdoms of Castille" is an almost absurdly good deal at this price.

I saw this disc in a library, El Mundo being a period performance group with which I was unfamiliar. This is a colorful and thought provoking disc beautifully played and sung. This theme of this disc is Spanish music of the 17th and 18th centuries and its influence throughout Europe. The diverse musical pieces come from several European and New World (Lima and Peru) composers. The disc begins, appropriately with an orchestral work by Domenico Scarlatti, who for many years was the composer to Portuguese and Spanish royal families. Perhaps the most interesting work is a short cantata in Spanish by George Frederic Handel, composed in 1708. Handel was living in Naples at the time where Spanish music was all the rage. This is the only work by Handel that was composed for guitar.

I like a program of early music that that blends instrumental and vocal music. The program presented by El Mundo is perfect. The instrumental works are perfectly played with a real feeling for the music. The soloists: Jennifer Ellis Kampani, Nell Snaidas and Paul Shipper are magnificent, providing a freshness and clarity to the music. The recording is well balanced and clear. This is a pleasant disc that makes me want to explore the other recordings of El Mundo.

This is an interesting conglomeration of music. The singing is mediocre and not on par with the effort of the musicians nonetheless there are 3 or 4 real gems on this disc.

El Mundo's CD's are engaging, beautifully recorded, and always rewarding. My favorite pieces are those sung by Nell Snaidas. Even though she's sadly missing from this CD, you can never go wrong with an El Mundo recording. This is not the dull, academic sort of thing that can induce a coma. It's lively, skillfully executed, and truly a pleasure to listen to. What more can one ask for?
