Book Description

8 and upKingfisher Family of Encyclopedias
The all-new Kingfisher Children's Encyclopedia has been specially designed to provide today's young readers with the latest information, state-of-the-art graphics and illustrations, and a functional and inviting layout that makes it even quicker and easier for them to find the information they seek. There's comprehensive coverage of all the topics a child could wish to research, including geography, science and technology, natural resources, animal life, transportation, communications, astronomy, history and prehistory, politics, religion, sports, and the arts. Clear, alphabetical organization and a simple cross-referencing feature make it easier to gather information on a particular topic and to tackle homework assignments. This generously illustrated encyclopedia will entertain, educate, and illuminate -- a marvelous resource for casual browsing, school assignments, home reference, and the ideal holiday gift for a favorite youngster. Special Features: Headwords always appear in the upper left corner of the page for quick reference. All entries begin with a concise definition of the subject. Text can be read section by section, or as a complete article. Complex diagrams are fully annotated for easy comprehension. Fast Fact boxes contain key facts and essential data. Cross-reference boxes guide the reader to realted articles and subject areas.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-This general encyclopedia contains about 200 articles on arbitrarily selected scientific, historical, geographical, and social topics, arranged alphabetically and capped by a brief section of statistics and biographies. The scope of the entries varies wildly, from "Aborigine" and "Hovercraft" to "Media" and "Revolution." Readers in search of specific information will be forced to flip repeatedly to and from the index. Each one-to-four page article includes several captioned, finely detailed, color photos and illustrations that supplement the thoroughly subheaded text. Aside from an occasional battle scene or slavering predator, the visuals are nicely designed to impart information rather than wow browsers. General coverage, though far from deep, is topical enough to include cybercafes, the Mars Pathfinder, and Mother Teresa's death. Such currency, plus a rare balance between verbal and visual information, would make this a suitable replacement for the Random House Children's Encyclopedia (1993)-except that the Children's Illustrated Encyclopedia (DK, 1998), roughly equivalent both in reading level and price, is packaged with its CD-ROM version and so will make a more desirable choice for collections that can't afford both.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for the homeschooling family!, May 17, 2000
This review is from: The Kingfisher Children's Encyclopedia (Kingfisher Family of Encyclopedias) (Hardcover)
I just recently purchased this book and absolutely love the layout! This very easy to use resource is the perfect "go-to" guide for kids 7 and up, and adults will enjoy pouring over it's content as well! Complete with an easy to understand summary of symbols and captions used throughout the encyclopedia, your young child can find his/her way through this book while gaining a better understanding of the world around us. It captivates the user with wonderful color illustrations as well as actual photographs that bring reality to each topic. I can't wait to put it to use in our homeschooling endeavor!
