It's our great big book of everything...,

This review is from: The Kingfisher First Encyclopedia of Animals (Kingfisher First Reference) (Paperback)
As a homeschool mother, this book has been an excellent tool in introducing my 6 year old and 3 year old to the animal kingdom. As my 6 yr old has said, "it has everything." As an adult I may have choosen to include more, but for my daughter, it is like front row seats to the zoo. It has large pictures, simple descriptions, and kindergarten age experiments as well. We have already made a bug habitat, a frog habitat, crafted a paper fish with scales, and made a mobile food chain, and that was in the first two weeks. I find myself wanting to teach science all the time. It really is a great book to enjoy with my daughters.

The thing that makes this encyclopedia of animals far superior to some of the others for young children is the way that the animals are arranged. It is not alphabetical, there are mammals, birds, reptiles, etc. This makes great sense to my toddler and is a good tool for helping her to understand classification. There is a Table of contents and an Index for quick look up. This is a great first animal encyclopedia that we read again and again and that will probably be well loved for years to come.

This book is a "first" encyclopedia and that is exactly what it is. A short overview of each animal. I like it and it is serving my homeschool needs with my 9 and 6 year old well this year. Just a taste into each animal. Not too deep. We read a page a day and the kids really enjoy it. That is what is great about homeschooling - the choice of what you want for your school. It is what I need and want. But if you want more and deeper, this might not be the book for you. Head the "first" and realize if you have older kids - you might want to pick a different book.

We love this book!!!! This book was needed for our science curriculum along with some others and this is our favorite out of what was needed. This is VERY colorful! I love the picture choices, the simple text for children to UNDERSTAND and ENGAGE their little minds. It's not overly texty and the pictures are NOT outdated. We love this book. Anytime science begins the kids ask for this book and if it's suppose to be used in our lesson that day they get excited. I really like this book and can't say enough positive about it. Even if you're NOT homeschooling or a school teacher you still would benefit from having this book in your home for any children under the middle school age...AND the book is written so a child with a good reading level can actually read it themselves!
So glad I got this updated version! So colorful and engaging. I'd purchase this for friends and family that enjoy science and want to share information with little children. Book is great for kids 10 and under.

I ordered this for my four-year-old grandson who I am sitting for this summer. He is heavily into frogs and snakes and lizards and he loves this book. He carries it with him and is constantly asking to have it read to him. I had no idea he would love it this much. It is a wonderful learning tool and has spurred his interest in books.

I'm using this book as a guide for teaching my children zoology. This book is perfect for guiding the way through learning all about animals. It has enough information to get going in the subject, without being overwhelming. It is a great resource and jumping off point for learning about animals. My children love it!

I got this after reading WTM, and my kids love it. It is well illustrated and gives just enough information without being busy or overwhelming for younger children.
