4.0 out of 5 stars Maybe not quite 4 stars...
...but they deserve to be a little overrated. Kinghorse was one of the inventors of the metal-punk sound, although it's always the immitators, never the innovators, who get all the glory.

The sound is tight and razor-sharp. Black Sabbath meets Black Flag, but with a healthy dose of originality and mania all their own. Kinghorse, their debut CD is a wild ride though...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good combination
This album is pretty straight-forward metal-- thrash with a melodic twist to it. The cover art is by Pushead, and the producer is Glenn Danzig, so you know that some heavyweights were involved in this creation.

...but they deserve to be a little overrated. Kinghorse was one of the inventors of the metal-punk sound, although it's always the immitators, never the innovators, who get all the glory.

The sound is tight and razor-sharp. Black Sabbath meets Black Flag, but with a healthy dose of originality and mania all their own. Kinghorse, their debut CD is a wild ride though screaching vocals, whoa-ho-ho chants, and crazy lyrics. Don't pay attention to the ego of their producer, Glenn Danzig, who slapped his own name on the album three times as big as anyone else's. This invites undue criticism and comparisons to Danzig, with whom they have very little in common. Kinghorse stands alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars too far ahead of its time, May 9, 2006
This review is from: Kinghorse (Audio CD)
If Kinghorse had come to the fore in the mid-90s instead of the late 80s they might have rocketed to the top. They were the blend of metal and punk that everyone was looking for without knowing it. The lyrics and personality of frontman Sean Garrison played an important part in their regional rise to prominence. They released another album on Slamdek that is worth obtaining and there are unreleased mp3s and videos floating around on the Internet that can be found via Google.

5.0 out of 5 stars A secret treasure, March 1, 2004
This review is from: Kinghorse (Audio CD)
Fast, hardcore, metal, unique: These 4 elements make up the amazing concotion know as Kinghorse. Basically a relentless battery of anger with occasional melodic expressions. I bought this album the month it was released and immediately loved it. Memorable riffs and lyrics with a splash of hardcore make this a metal feast for the ears. I think this album is too intense for most people 'cause everyone I know hates it except me. I still listen to this record when I want something unique to kick me awake. This album puts the current music scene to shame. Sadly, Kinghorse didn't last long enough to make other albums but this record will always be a powerful stab of emotion. Kinghorse is one of the most unique bands I have ever heard.

I've never heard anything like Kinghorse. They are heavy, but melodic. Melodic, but not whimpy. This is a good album if you don't like today's lame metal.

5.0 out of 5 stars This CD is a pure ride through your emotions., October 26, 1998
This review is from: Kinghorse (Audio CD)
One of the best records I've ever owned. This CD is a trip through your emotions. Listening to it puts me in a cathartic state. THe music is incredibly intense, slightly black sabathish, slightly punk, slightly hardcore, coupled with some amazing and powerful vocals that are sung, and sometimes screamed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lost classic of genre-crossing metal, August 14, 2010
This review is from: Kinghorse (Audio CD)
US band Kinghorse released their self-titled debut in 1991. I bought this disc "blind" because of the Pushead cover artwork and the fact that Glenn Danzig produced it, and was very happy with it. Kinghorse had a pretty impressive mix of styles - a bit metal, a bit punk, a bit hardcore, and all rockin'. The doomy guitar riffs remind me of early Black Sabbath, but the deep vocals are closer to the Misfits or maybe Black Flag. It's also similar to Life of Agony, another `90s band that pushed the boundaries of hard rock and metal.

Kinghorse really should have been more popular, even once grunge rolled in. Their kind of metal wouldn't have been out of place with bands like Alice in Chains or Soundgarden. Instead, another great band got overlooked. If you're a fan of forward-thinking metal, you'll want to give this album a try.

4.0 out of 5 stars ahead of its time, yet too far gone, June 20, 2008

A great record by a forgotten band (except if you live in Louisville). Kinghorse had a great sound, equal parts Damned (1st album), Black Flag and Black Sabbath. Mark's guitar playing is the missing link between Tony Iommi and Brian James. He currently plays in a great band called ARCH. Someone should re-release it under a new name and convince everyone it's a new band. Noone would know.

And the cover is ALMOST as good as Mighty High...In Drug City.
