First came across this little gem in the 70s as an Ariel game. Ariel made some of the cleverest games in print at the time and this was arguably one of their two best offerings (the other being Diplomacy).

I bought the Avalon Hill first edition version, played it keenly, but had to sell it in lean times. Later I bought this one.

The game is a light-hearted (but not comical) look at the Wars of the Roses. Players construct factions of Nobles, give them titles and jobs that grant them physical and political clout using cards, and storm all over England grabbing Yorkist and Lancastrian heirs to the throne, killing off the opposition's heirs when possible, trying not to get sieged, ambushed or plagued to death and scheming to be in possession of the last legitimate Heir to The Throne - at which point the game ends, typically with demands for a rematch sometime soon.

Games last from an hour to maybe three hours depending on player familiarity and in-game factors (summoning parliament can cause long pauses in action as players lobby for favor in the form of titles and offices).

The playing pieces are made of sturdy card and feature very well printed heraldic designs identifying actual noble families involved in the Wars of the Roses.

The board is the usual three-part bifold affair for Avalon Hill. I use plastic clips to hold the board sections together.

There are no dice involved in the basic game as the combat is a very abstract "turn a card" thing.

One thing not mentioned in the Avalon Hill Version is the ability to "deal in" a late arrival and have them join the fun even for a game that has been running some time.
