Peculiar collection,

This review is from: Kings of Calypso (Audio CD)
This is a peculiar collection that focuses on calypso in England from the 50's to the 70's. It stores lots of excellent recordings by calypso-legends Lord Invader (the man who wrote Rum and Coca Cola) and The Mighty Terror. A legendary song like New York Subway is on it, accompanied by lesser known but terrific tunes. It also has songs on it by Calypso-nobodies Ben Bowers (who sounds like a Dixie-land singer), Noel Anthony and The Torpedo. These are just 10 of the 28 songs. For vintage-calypso collectors this is not a bad acquisition. Skip the ten crappy tunes and it's a great album. For Calypso-starters there are better albums on the market, especially on Rounder Records.

This is an excellent cd that focuses on 50's calypso in England. I played this cd for two weeks every day. The Woman Police and Bed Bug by Invader( Both Spoiler originals), Kitchener's cavalcade- by Terror, an excellent Tribute to Kitchener, especially since Kitchie has left us. The anglicised version of Jumbie Jamboree, ( Zombie Jamboree) will still you tapping your feet, The Teddy Boy calypso - Bring Back the Cat o'nine, Invader's Africa Here I come. For Vintage calypso collerctor/fan , This is a must have for one's collection.
