I've heard that this book sparked the idea for the "Quest for Camelot" animated movie. I know that was the main reason I tracked it down. Though this is an extremely well written story, I think it only fair to warn parents -- it differs CONSIDERABLY from "Quest for Camelot". The themes in the book are very adult -- dealing with murder, rape, betrayel and death. It is probably suitable for teenagers, but not younger children. None of this material is presented in a gratutious or overly gory manner, but because Vera Chapman draws her characters so well, it is near-impossible to read this book without being alternately horrified, touched and, finally, moved by its bitter-sweet ending. I think if I had tried to read this when I was a child, it would have proved too upsetting for me. Like I said: fine for teens and up, keep away from younger children, unless you're sure your child can handle the subject matter.
