Anything that has DJ Premier on it is worth listening to.Here he blends together classic funk, & soul cuts (check out the Pointer Sinster's "Don't it drive you crazy" which Premier himself used to lace the Step in the Arena classic "Execution of a Chump")or the original "Ain't no Half-Steppin" track, which was sampled countless times. Mr Thing can be heard mixing together 90s underground Hip Hop. What's good about this mix is that is allows you to go back in time and relive timeless classics (Eric B. & Rakim's "Microphone Fiend") and also to rediscover some underground tracks that you may have forgotten, or even overlooked (Common & De La Soul's collaboration "The Business", Kenny Dope's scratches on "Get on Down" to name but a few). Get this album if: 1. You are fed up with corporate rap and want to go back and relive what Hip Hop music was all about 2. You are new to hip hop and want to have an introduction to the music. Either way, just get this album, you won't regret it.

This was a surprisingly beautiful two CD set. I didn't read all of the info inside the CD cover, but I could feel why these tracks were chosen. DJ Premier and Mr. Thing know what hip hop is and where it truly came from. The songs that they chose were underground groundbreakers of their era. I had forgotten some of them. If you play this CD set, you will have a nice reminiscent atmosphere, that can be partied to or just plain enjoyed in the background, while rating your Amazon purchases.

I have been a DJ Premier fan since I heard (Deep Concentration) in the late 80's early 90's. I've enjoyed Gangstarr and Premier's production, beats, cuts and scratches on many other songs for other artist. With that said, it is easier for me to compare what I have heard and looked forward to over the years versus the (mixing, cutting/scratching or lack of on this Kings of Hip Hop CD. When I think DJ Premier, I don't think average or mediocre. In fact, that is an oxymoron... DJ Premier and average DJ'ing should not be in the same sentence or paragraph. However, in my opinion, the blending, mixing and scratching was not the Premier caliber that I have become accustomed to. Although, I liked the individual records that were selected, they just did not seem to blend well together. For example, Grover Washington/ Mister Magic mixed with Ohio Players/Skin Tight and Chaka Kahn/Sweet Thing mixed with Screaming Jay Hawkins/Put A Spell on You. Those records to me just did not go well together and there are other combinations that did not work well with each other. I expected far more of Premiers sharp cuts and scratches with some good mixing and blending but he only delivered about 75%. Perhaps my expectations were all wrong, maybe the intention was to just play records and give homage to some older songs. In most cases especially toward the end of both CD's many of the songs were pretty much just played with out any DJ'ing. In fact some of the cuts, scratches and blends that were present, seemed to be a little sloppy and off beat. The second CD mixed by Mr. Thing was pretty much the same, although he played Hip Hop records there was very little DJ'ing... he just pretty much played the songs as well. Overall, I like the concept. Giving props to the people/groups that made the songs that many artist have sampled from over the years. Then to follow up on the second CD with some real hip hop joints. I liked 99% of the songs that were selected for both CD's. I am not too familiar with Mr. Thing but I expected far more from DJ Premier.

i bought this CD simply because it had DJ Premier name on it.i'm a big DJ Premier fan and always looking forward to hearing the music he has produced. But unfortunately, there's nothing special about this CD. as a matter of fact, i don't even know why disc 1 is included as a part of 'kings of hip hop'. This is straight up Jazz CD. i was looking forward to some scratches and cuts done by DJ premier, but he does so little in here. Usually when you hear a song, you know if it's done by Premo. But with this one, you can never tell that. 2nd CD mixed by Mr.Thing ain't that great either. They simply got the permission to put DJ premier's name on the album cover so that they can sell more albums....i feel like i got robbed. |
