5.0 out of 5 stars Like Mad Men, this "Unofficial" guide is Thought-Provoking and Talk-Generating
"Unofficial" guides are a mixed lot--their success depends on the writer's creativity and ability to find--and nerve to reveal--nuggets of juicy information. A major fan of Mad Men and '60s culture, I opened Mr. McLean's book with an open mind. 3.0 out of 5 stars inside mad men
I am hooked with the series, have all dvd first 3 seasons. This book, helps to see small details I missed, and the author acts like a friend with whom to share all the thrill. It is written by someone who was fascinated and searched more info and found it and had the good idea to publish it. thanks!

5.0 out of 5 stars Like Mad Men, this "Unofficial" guide is Thought-Provoking and Talk-Generating, December 19, 2009
This review is from: Kings of Madison Avenue: The Unofficial Guide to Mad Men (Paperback)
"Unofficial" guides are a mixed lot--their success depends on the writer's creativity and ability to find--and nerve to reveal--nuggets of juicy information. A major fan of Mad Men and '60s culture, I opened Mr. McLean's book with an open mind. But there was no need to be anxious--it's a fast, fun, and fact-filled compendium of the show's first two seasons that is as particular with detail as the show is. He covers its origin, cultural and social influence, plots, personalities (with photos), use of NYC landmarks, spirits consumed, historical references, and much more. It's official: this guide is the perfect supplement to a superior show.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not a "sit down and read" but rather a reference guide, August 6, 2010

This book is great! I bought it initially thinking it would be a book to sit and read but in fact, it is a great episode companion. Read it before you watch the old episode and check back later to find what you missed. The cultural references are so helpful and he really has a great eye for detail.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great, insightful read for big Mad Men fans, August 10, 2010

I'm one of those Mad Men fans that have watched every episode in the series thus far multiple times - maybe even dozens. I notice new details each and every time, no matter how subtle. If you're the kind of fan that loves the series that much and admires all the details, this is a fun read. It delves into interesting cultural, era and landmark-specific aspects, giving you a broader appreciation for not only what was going on in the episode, but what's gone into making an episode. From learning about the actors themselves, to things that have influenced Matt Weiner to famous authors and books of the time, you'll walk away even more satisfied with everything you've enjoyed and - if you're like me - want to relive those episodes another time or two.

For all MM addicts. This is a terrific book. It coordinates real NYC history with each show. I was raised in Manhattan and my father was in advertising during that entire era. WOW It puts you right there

Fun, easy read that enriches the Mad Men viewing experience. Ends at Season Two so hopefully it'll be updated, maybe at the end of Season Four.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice Layout but Misses Some Important Facts, September 26, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
No single book could include everything there is to know about Mad Men's first or second seasons. The cast bios left out interesting tid bits that are novel not obscure (Roger Sterling's on screen wife, Mona is his actual wife in real life). MAJOR plot points are missed (Joan Halloway's roommate confesses her long standing lesbian love for Joan only to be dismissed) in several episodes. I say: get the DVD's watch the special features rather than taking the time for the text, if you have that kind of time.
Overall, the book is not bad. It is generally well researched.
