Good writing, August 16, 2009

This series is well-written and has an all too rare balance of drama, action, intelligent dialogue, and an entertaining plotline.
I heard that the first season will also be the last. I hope that's not true, but if so, it just goes to show that most people prefer more dumbed-down entertainment.

Do yourself a favor and give this show a shot, April 18, 2011

I watched this show in my last year of college when it was on NBC in the 2008-2009 season. Enough time has elapsed now that I can watch it again.
The way NBC handled this excellent show was almost criminal. I feel like someone in NBC had a great idea, and somebody else decided they wanted to scuttle it because its religious ties to the Old Testament went against their worldview. NBC had the Superbowl the year this came out, and they advertised Survivor 12 or whatever and didn't advertise this show. They quickly consigned it to a graveyard time slot and then exiled it into the summer on a Saturday night, without ever giving it a shot.
This series is set in the near future in some kind of USA-like world where everyone seems to be recovering from a terrible war. The US doesn't exist. People have Blackberry's, but RIM is now where to be found. Flat screen TVs are around, but Sony and Vizio are gone. They've just rebuilt themselves back into a geopolitical and technological situation like we enjoy today. It is LOOSELY based on the Old Testament story of King David.
This series was AMAZING, and the last of a dying breed of show: big budget, famous actors (Ian McShane), great effects, great writers. It had fantastic intrigue and scheming behind the scenes, plots within plots within plots, and was a refreshing break from the deluge of smut that the broadcast networks give us and call reality TV. Don't let the (admittedly) occasionally overt religious references turn you off. Just give the story a chance to reel you into a fascinating world with fascinating characters. You won't regret it. After NBC decided to kill this show, they deserve to be left in the dust by the cable networks (FX, HBO) that still have the guts to produce good television.

super enjoyable, January 7, 2010

I thought the cast was great, and the characters were well written. Not many men could pull off a butterfly as their emblem and still be as macho and intense as Silas. My only problem was that with its need for story progression some of the secondary characters weren't given enough time to develop so they can feel like a plot device rather than a person.
Not being particularly religious I was a bit skeptical about the David vs Goliath and the potential for the show to be more preachy than entertaining, but it follows an alternate time line and focuses on the characters' beliefs rather than trying to make the viewer believe.
It was interesting and fast paced (possibly because they knew their ratings were low?) but most of all COMPLETE so you aren't left irritated that there wasn't one more episode.
