Pop-Punk Is sometimes Really Good,
By Elizabeth Saunders (Auora, CO USA) - See all my reviews

Home Grown is pop-punk, which most people don't like, but this band is great! They are awesome at their instruments, and their lyrics are great. This is the second release frome Home Grown. And it is one of the best. I gave it 5 stars because of the reasons above. If you like this band check out Finch, New Found Glory, and Allister, all bands on Drive Thru Records.1. Tomorrow - A rockin' song to start of the album

I love this cd. Pop-Punk is my favorite type of music, and these guys are some of the best pop-punk I've ever heard. Songs that immediately stood out as my favorites were Tommorrow, Give it Up, Kiss Me Diss Me, and the single You're Not Alone. I can't get enough of the song Tomorrow. But honestly, there isn't a bad song on this album. This disc is jam-packed with catchy guitar riffs and songs about girls, which I think is awesome. If you like any kind of pop-punk at all, you'll love this cd, and even if you dont like pop-punk, hopefully you can make room in your heart for the guys of Homegrown. If you like good music, buy this cd.

Having never been a ska-punk fan, I never got the chance to get into Home grown in their earlier years... A friend of mine had burned a whole buncha crap onto a mix CD and was playing it in his car when the song "I Love you, Not" came on. It was super catchy and reminded me alot of Mest's "breakin' down". I went out and got the CD (along with their EP "when it all comes down") and at first I didn't like it. The only other song that truly stuck out was "disaster". After a few more listens though, most of the songs stuck and now its hard to pick a favorite. I'd also like to note that the guitarist in "home grown" is highly above average for the pop-punk genre, giving guitar lovers something along the lines of SUM 41 meets RUFiO. I'd recommend this album to you if you like: Mest, Blink 182, SUM 41, Allister, RUFiO and maybe even A New Found Glory.

For Fans of Pop-Punk (Not The Ramones Kind),

Okay..first off. I went through this whole stage where I thought all of the drive-thru record bands sucked. Then i started listening to this band again. Home Grown might not bring anything new to the pop-punk scene lyrically, but they give Blink-182, Good Charlotte (even though i dislike them), and a New Found Glory a run for their money. The guitars give good riffs, and they sound a lot like Blink-182 riffs in most songs. anyways...the singers don't sound too much like Tom or Mark from Blink-182, but the pattern is the same. In other words, a drummer, and two guitar players who both sing (just like Blink-182). The ditched the ska-punk thing, and went straight pop punk on this cd. If they had more exposure, they could have been as popular as Yellowcard or the Ataris, because Home Grown is better (in my opinion). THe catchiness of Sugarcult, the humor of Blink-182, the singing of allister, and the guitar power of sum 41 all in one. since im not good at those if blah and blah had sex this would be their offspring stuff so...COMPARISONS: Fall Out Boy, Blink-182, Sum-41, Green Day, Catalyst-era NFG, Sugarcult, Unsung Zeroes, Allister, Nerf Herder, GOB. For fans of Fall Out Boy, Allister, and Blink-182.

well, i bought this cd not expecting much. I love drive thru records and decided what the hell they should be decent if they are on drive thru. I Never was truly a fan before that, i bought the cd mainly because i heard the song surfer girl from their cd before this one and i was like damn thats a cool song (and my friend kyle was telling me it was good) So i went down to my [local store] and it was there... so i was like what the [heck]? I bought it and i was blown away. They are still a typical pop punk band nothing to special. but its sooo... catchy, they do those "whoooaaaa"'s in like every song so youll be anywhere and find yourself singing it. originally i hated the songs "give it up", and "not alone" because i heard the demo version on the drive thru comp but they totally made those songs better (by far the best songs on the cd) the drum fading intro on "not alone" almost made me have an orgasm. what can i say... by this cd while its cheap, if not get it anyways. Im going to for sure check these guys out when i go to warped tour tomorow in san francisco. BUY THIS NOW> It will be the best [money] you ever spent!

More tongue-in-cheek punk,

I should first admit that I really like Home Grown a lot. They are definitely tons more musically talented than some unnamable bands on the Drive Thru label. For close to a decade Home Grown demonstrated that they excel at being a poppy Green Day version of Guttermouth. But this album tests Home Grown's musical growth as they dabble into emo-ish melodies and lyrics that reek more of Dashboard Confessional. However Home Grown pulls it off with such deft and ease with edgy, boisterous songs that bust out with Home Grown's signature solos... Stand out tracks are: "Cannot Stop the World," "Tomorrow," "You're Not Alone," "Why Won't You Leave Me" and "Give it Up"--that one reminds me of Foo Fighters' 'Generator.' The new Home Grown beckons to you to bust out your car stereo system--I suggest you do it justice and get this CD...

They got good...,

I've known Home Grown since they released "That's Business", and I always thought they were pretty mediocre and unoriginal. While they may not be creating any groundbreaking music on this album, they have definately grown as a band...This is a great CD, they finally found their niche as the Kings of Pop.

Home Grown - Kings of Pop,
By Rob Testerman (Baltimore, Maryland USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Kings of Pop (Audio CD)
For a band which has been making waves for the past 5-7 years, this album has been my first real taste of Homegrown. I have mixed feelings about this band. See, they have 2 singers, each switching vocal duties and songwriting on half of the album. Now, where as I really enjoy the songs by Adam (bass), I generally can't stand the songs by John (guitar). Adams songs generally have a cleaner sound, as he has a higher voice and better range. The lyrical content is also prevalently mature with Adams tracks. Now, to John's credit, he can write some of the catchiest hooks I have ever heard, but it doesn't make up for the weak verse or childish lyrics. With that said, Homegrown is sadly a run of the mill pop punk band. That doesn't mean that they don't write catchy songs implementing cool riffs, predominantly staccato drumming, and addictive hooks, but most bands seem to have that under control now. The only thing that really separates them from every other band is their true mastery of a rockin riff. The music really pulls you into the song. Occasionally Adam will bust out with a line that really sticks, but there is nothing really new on here. Its probably for the best that I have been listening to Glassjaw and Near Miss all day, because if I had attempted to review this after listening to New Found Line, Starting Glory or Fenix 182, I'd most likely be covered in my own vomit. Not a bad album, but nothing special either.Rating: 5.5/10 For reviews like this and much more, visit bigtouchin.com |
