5.0 out of 5 stars One of their best
I have always loved this CD. Though I will concur with the others that have reviewed this CD (the first song is the best) the rest of the songs are not to be forgotten! Money Can't Buy Me Love is fantastic. The Gambler is amusing, and Noveau Poor is toungue-in-cheek. I reccommend this CD to anyone who love the King's Singers.

New Day: a great performance. Lovely background voices and balances. A great mix and a rich sound. Too bad the rest of the CD doesn't come close to measuring up.

I agree somewhat with both "Anacortes" and "No Interest." Most of the other selections really should not have been recorded - they just don't fit the CD, esp. after such an inspiring New...

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful singing; clever arrangements, June 14, 2002
This review is from: The Kings Singers - New Day (Audio CD)
I have been a fan of The King's Singers since their debut recording thirty years ago. New Day is one of my favourite albums. It has the terrific optimistic song "New Day," but many other wonderful tracks.

"Can't Buy Me Love" is sung as if it had been written by one of the Renaissance madrigal writers when he was in a very good mood. There are other up tempo tracks like this one, including Abba's "Money, Money, Money" and "The Rhythm of Life," but the CD also includes some romantic, lush singing in songs such as "Three Times A Lady," "The Summer Knows" and "It Was Almost Like A Song."

The clever arrangement of Barry Manilow's "Could It Be Magic?" begins with an extract from a sombre Chopin Prelude in C minor.

Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars PBS Promo Song "You are the New Day"the Highlight of this CD, March 18, 1999

The King's Singers can take any song and change it into something unique. They prove it on this CD, changing from classic to current and back. Each song is a surprise. My favorite (who needs to listen to the rest?) is "You Are The New Day" which was used by PBS in a promotional spot.

5.0 out of 5 stars For the people without narrow minds, June 29, 2000

First off, I have been a great fan of the King's Singers for over two years now and have enjoyed all their songs, and the songs on New Day are no exception. It demonstrates there great range. From a soulful piece like You Are The New Day to a fun, humorous, and silly piece like Nouveau Poor to a great R&B classic like Three Times A Lady.

And as for those who think that certain songs shouldn't be made into choral arrangements, that is closed minded and overlooks the fact that crossing genres can give a new, fresh and beautiful look at a song.

A must have for all, especially King's Singers fans.

The previous reviewers are right on target. The title selection for this recording is astounding. I first heard it on my local Public Broadcasting Station and knew then that I had to have a copy. I was excited to find out that it was only one song in a recording by the King's Singers. However, when I listened to the other songs, I was sorely disappointed. Nevertheless, the opening selection is so good that it justifies the entire CD purchase. I just wish the rest of the CD was of similar quality and musical integrity.

New Day: a great performance. Lovely background voices and balances. A great mix and a rich sound. Too bad the rest of the CD doesn't come close to measuring up.

I agree somewhat with both "Anacortes" and "No Interest." Most of the other selections really should not have been recorded - they just don't fit the CD, esp. after such an inspiring New Day. And yes, I noticed the "flaw" right toward the end too - on the VI/7 chord moving to the II/7 chord - but I don't think it took away from the performance. It is no big deal, and might just add to the intensity of the resolution. Good ear, Anacortes.

Again, too bad the rest of the album doesn't come close to the quality of New Day.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some exceptional tracks make this CD a joy to own, March 23, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Kings Singers - New Day (Audio CD)
New Day is not only a beautiful piece of music, but the performance is darn near perfect. The only flaw is a slight intonation problem in the highest voice right toward the end of the piece.

Nouveau Poor is a great, fun tune. Some of the others leave me a little cold - not the performances, but the selections. However, the album is not a serious collection, so for what it is, it's good.

The group doesn't sing as technically flawlessly as other groups (Chanticleer, for example), but they sing with great energy and enthusiasm. And the pieces are tough. Overall, the Kings Singers continue to retain their rightful place at the top of the a capella entertainment field.

I love this CD, every song on it. In fact I use it to audition new equipment, and in every audio store I've brought it, the salesman has taken notes from the cover so he can get his own copy. The title song is fabulous, but many of the others are not far behind. Of course there are a few I tend to pass over, but all in all the performances are simply wonderful. I should add that as a former member of the London Symphony Chorus, the New York Choral Society and other choruses and glee clubs, and many many years ago top tenor in a barbershop quartet, I am partial to singing groups of this kind - and of this kind, the King's Singers (at least in this incarnation - there have been many over the years) are among the best. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars New Day, May 7, 2009
This review is from: The Kings Singers - New Day (Audio CD)
I collect vinyl and I found this record one day. It became a favorite and so I sent for it on CD so I could play it where there was no turntable. The Kings Singers are terrific and they chose a wonderful group of songs. I like the variety of styles. They are so versatile, keeping it interesting. I particularly enjoy "New Day" and "The Gambler."
