Book Description

February 1, 2004 Sir Geoffrey Mappestone Mysteries
A Sir Geoffrey Mappestone mystery
March 1102, and Robert de Belleme, the Black Earl of Shrewsbury, is summoned to appear before King Henry's Easter Court, to answer for siding with the King's older brother, the Duke of Normandy, in an attempt to steal the King's throne.
Meanwhile, in the crowded and dangerous streets of Southwark, south of the river Thames, Crusader Knights Sir Geoffrey Mappestone and the hearty Sir Roger of Durham witness a man murdered by hanging from the window of the Crusader's Arms Inn. But this is not just any man, he is the illegitimate nephew of Robert de Belleme, and had apparently been holding a meeting with two mysterious men. In fact, it turns out the inn has been used for many meetings of the earl's spies, and there are plans afoot to obtain a terrible weapon to use against the King, one that the Crusader Knights remember with a terrible fear from the Siege of Jerusalem Greek Fire.
Solving the murder is only the first step in uncovering the plot against the King.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Beaufort offers another entertaining adventure featuring medieval knight Sir Geoffrey Mappestone and his sidekick, Roger of Durham. It's 1102 and King Henry's crown rests uneasily on his head. Plans to unseat the king and replace him with his brother, the Duke of Normandy, abound. One of the nobles who sides with the duke is the Black Earl, Roger de Belleme, who has been summoned to Henry's court to answer for his disloyalty. Geoffrey and Roger are also on their way to see Henry, and wherever the pair goes, adventure follows. This time they witness the gruesome murders of de Belleme's cousin and a priest who purportedly carries a vital message to the king. Before long, Geoffrey and Roger are caught up in solving the murders, which appear to be linked to both the plot against Henry and a terrible weapon called Greek Fire. A fine plot, unexpected twists, engaging characters, a liberal sprinkling of humor, and plenty of rousing escapades make this an excellent choice for historical mystery fans. Emily Melton

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining historical mystery, June 17, 2004
This review is from: The King's Spies (Sir Geoffrey Mappestone Mysteries) (Hardcover)
When King Henry I calls him home from the First Crusade, Sir Geoffrey Mappestone knows the result can only be trouble. Henry doesn't especially like Geoffrey, but he does have some control over him--because of Geoffrey's English estates. What Henry demands is that Geoffrey infiltrate an enemy Earl's camp and ensure the destruction of his fortress. Since Earl Robert de Belleme already hates Geoffrey, this isn't an easy task. And the task is made that much tougher when Geoffrey comes across Belleme's nephew--recently hung to death--and becomes a suspect in the murder himself.

Belleme has heard of Geoffrey's sleuthing abilities, though, and gives him a week to find the true killer. Of course, Geoffrey has to stay alive for that week first, and things look increasingly dicey as the reign of murder continues.

Author Simon Beaufort explores a fascinating historical period--when Normans and Saxons still jostled in England, when the Crusades were at their very beginning when all things seemed possible, when magic was a very real force, and when the English crown rested uneasily between Henry and his older brother, the Duke of Normandy. Beaufort dresses up his story with Greek fire, female knights, a gay squire, Geoffrey's loyal but not-so-bright friend Roger, and Belleme's beautiful but dangerous sisters.

Fans of medieval historical action and of historical mystery are certain to enjoy this well written story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very well done., November 10, 2005
This review is from: The King's Spies (Sir Geoffrey Mappestone Mysteries) (Hardcover)
This is a wonderfully written book full of interesting, and mostly fact-based characters; Geoff who'd rather be back at the Crusades, his loyal friend Roger who is not always the sole of discretion, the gay squire Durand, Bishop Maurice of London who insisted his frequent need for sex was a medical necessity, and the Belleme women who practice witchcraft and fight as knights. This was a fascinating time in British History and Beaufort does an excellent job of using that period as a backdrop to what is essentially a murder mystery. Fans of historical mysteries will enjoy this.
