Editorial Reviews

Review

“After twenty years a man walks out of prison and into as vivid and powerful a story as I have read in a long, long time. From the first sentence, you know that this is the real thing. The writer understands crime and desperation and anger, and the secret places in the heart that hide behind the violence. What an extraordinary ride!”
--Whitley Strieber, New York Times bestselling author of Hybrids

Lots of action and violence and a decent plot. Good gangster, hustler, jailhouse, street life type book. Not too much sex or too much "character development" which is my personal preference. I prefer more action and dialogue. Speaking of which, Ice could have used some help with the logistics or simply have based it in California. The language is more west coast and maybe even a little southeastern or southwestern. The dialogue is not really that of the northeast and definitely not NYC, but that is a small thing. I believe he and his co-writer are both from the west coast. Why they chose to use NYC for the background I am not sure. All in all, I enjoyed it. There is a follow up to this one, "mirror image," that I look forward to reading. Good job.

Ice T might be the big name in selling this but readers would be well served to know that his co-writer "Mal Radcliff" is indeed Gary Phillips, one of the country's most underrated mystery writers and himself a prouct of the mean streets of L.A., where when not writing,he is a community organizer well familiar with life in the ghettoes where he grew up. Ice T couldn't have picked a better partner for his foray into fiction writing.

It's like American Gangster meets the Soprano's meets Pulp Fiction. Terrific, well drawn characters with great dialogue give this glimpse at the the modern underworld of NYC an entertaining and compelling vibe. I recommend it to anyone and and look forward to the sequel.
