That's where your food is actually cooking so an accurate temperature reading at the grill surface is essential.

This thermometer confirms my guesses as to grill temperature when cooking, and helps me adjust my cooking times with the existing charcoal.
Steve Scott
Pros: reads temperature of grill at the grate Cons: thermometer face turned brown and glass browned, so cannot read dial after 4 uses.

I purchased this thermometer hoping that it would give me the exact grill or grate temp. Works just like it said it would and it's a plus for cooking steaks and Etc.

I always read the reviews on a product before purchase and I would truly recommend this product to a friend.

great quality thermometer, gives me an accurate temperature on the grill, I especially like the color area, for ex. the low and slow, don't have to stress my eye sight in on the hot smokey grill to see that its in that range,

There have been many negative reviews about this surface thermometer, but they're easy to address by knowing the limits of this simple device. First, it will be a slow to get a reading due to heat build-up. This only means that there are many factors present when grilling that may hinder a precise reading, including weather conditions and the particular grill on which its being used.

Second, it does get dirty and greasy if you leave it on the grill. That's what happens to things when you combine a hot surface and grease. The trick is to clean it (or even wipe it down) after each use, or spray it with a degreaser of some kind (Easy-Off works too) before the build-up gets too thick. Ordinary baking soda works wonders - all you have to do is to wet the surface (don't submerge it) and sprinkle it with baking soda. Wait a few minutes, then scrub off the grease. Easy-Peasey.

My grill has no thermometer in the hood, so I was constantly guessing at "Medium" or "Low" heat. Just because the knob setting says medium does NOT mean that it is in the 350 degree range or any range at all. You can place this directly on the grid after preheating and check when the temp is right for your roast or veggies or other things. Glad to have one that is so easy to use and well made.

I was skeptical about this thermometer because there's a hand full of reviews about it being slow but there are a lot of good reviews so I was hoping that the people who left bad reviews were unlucky and received defective ones. If that is the case then I was unlucky too and received a lemon as well. I have a cheap oven thermometer from Walmart in my grill but decided to get a real surface thermometer but the kingsford one was extremely slow. The oven thermometer and my lid thermometer are pretty quick and read out the temperature within 30 seconds but after 5 minutes the Kingsford was still 50 degrees below my other 2 that were already reading out 400 degrees. The Kingsford actually never reached the temperature of my other 2 thermometers during the entire grill and when I shut off the grill the other 2 thermometers had dropped down to 100 degrees but after 5 minutes the Kingsford was still reading 250 degrees!

Whether I received a lemon like several others or not, I advised against this thermometer because it will probably just waste your time.

I bought this item to check the temperature on my commercial grade griddle. The dial would take a long time to move, even after 20 minutes on the griddle it would still be moving but really slowly. I need something that will give me a faster response. look for something digital instead.

I have a Green Egg, the thermometer on the unit is defective. I was considering replacing it, after reviewing the many kind of thermometer for grill out there I decided to try the Kingford Grill Surface Thermometer primary it read surface grilling temperature. The most important in grilling or smoking is have the grilling surface at a constant temperature before you start putting the meat on the grill. Afterward it's a matter of time and meat temperature.
I use the Kingford thermometer to get the temp right for a Beef Lion and recently a 13 lb Turkey. On both occasion they came out perfect.
I recommend this product to anyone that is serious about grill meat to a perfection.
