4.0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive Flash Drive - simple and easy to use
I bought this 2GB Kingston drive on 11/15/07 at my local electronic store for less than 20 bucks. This drive is simple, it has a retractable USB port to protect from dust; and no more looking around for lost caps that most flash drives tend to have. At 2GB, the actual usable space is about 1.9GB. Speed is pretty mediocre - I was able to move a 128MB file from my...

Quite simply if you are looking to spend on a mid-range USB flash memory stick which you can quickly pull out from time to time from a computer bag pocket then this is where it is at. Speed is pretty mediocre - I was able to move a 128MB file from my harddrive to the flash drive in about 32sec (4MB/sec transfer rate). Moving that same file from the flash drive to the hard drive takes about 8 seconds (16MB/sec). Both upload and download rate is slower than some benchmarks that I've seen on the web. However, it is acceptable to me, especially for the cost.

The other notable point about this drive is that it has *NO* software in it. So just plug and play. No annoying U3 software that people frequently complain about on other drives. If there is one big gripe that I do not like, it is that the drive is black in color. In the beginning, I didn't think it was a big deal, but after using it awhile, I'm starting to regret it because it blends so well with the background on my desk, making it difficult for me to grab it without looking. I would have prefer a red-color flash-drive next time so it can stand out a little more. Overall a simple functional drive and a great bargain.

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 - 2 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive DT100/2GB (Personal Computers)
Quite simply if you are looking to spend on a mid-range USB flash memory stick which you can quickly pull out from time to time from a computer bag pocket then this is where it is at. This Kingston flash memory stick is fast, holds 2 GB and comes at a very nice price. It is also very small, maybe one of the smallest sticks on the market. However it is delicate and doesn't come with a cap.

If you want a pro-stick and are willing to shell out two to three times the price, then go elsewhere. If you want a stick that will constantly go around with you in your pocket, go elsewhere for something tougher. If you just need a stick that you will use from time to time and can put away in your computer bag, then this is exactly what you want. Great price for the storage capacity and speed, but very light and not for constant use or pocket travel because it lacks physical integrity.

Pros
- Cheap
- Small
- Light
- Fast
- 2 GB
- Kingston

Cons
- Delicate
- No cap
- Almost all plastic except for the connection

3.0 out of 5 stars Kingston Hi-Speed Data Traveller 2GB USB Flash Memory, October 30, 2008

Product is ok. $$$ for flash is dropping fast. Look to pay no more than $5/GB for 1-2 gigs; $4/GB for 4-8 gigs... Make sure it has a High Speed USB connection (i.e. USB 2.0). Make sure you get a secure memory stick if you plan on keeping confidential information or sensitive material. Also try to find the specs at which it reads and writes, this is where this lacks a little. Lexar Lightning Jump Drive has both security software and can read at 24MB/sec and write at 18MB/sec... but costs a bit more ($6/GB for 1-2 gigs and $5/GB for 4 gigs).

1.0 out of 5 stars Cracks in half, January 26, 2009
This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 - 2 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive DT100/2GB (Personal Computers)
I have bought over 3 dozen various memory keys for my students. By far, the worst one is this memory key. It cracks in half within a week, and my children lose all their work. Everyone of these that I have given to my students has cracked. Now, the white Kingston Data Traveler with the cap on it and the square ribbon holder is by far the best one. These thumb drives have lasted for over a year now.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good price, improved over previous version., August 17, 2008

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 - 2 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive DT100/2GB (Personal Computers)
Cheap flash drives never state their writing speed, so I wasn't sure if this DT100 was going to be any better than the older DTI.

I used a set of 116 different MP3s, ranging from 3.5MB to 4.5MB, with a total size of 447 MB. The DTI took 153 seconds to write the files (2.92MB/s). This DT100 only needed 96 seconds (4.65MB/s) for the same files.

There are much faster drives available, but for the rock-bottom price, this one is good.

Used this to replace a PNY that had terrible case design. I love the slide out USB design. Much more durable than the type that just have a cap. Plus I don't worry about losing a tiny cap in my pocket!

The pendriver works like should be, but the constrution need less plastic or better quality of plastic... if you are going to use this at work heavily you may wan to chose another pendriver. If you are working in a friendly enviroment... this one get the job done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast, cheap, convenient, what's not to like?, September 22, 2009

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 - 2 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive DT100/2GB (Personal Computers)
I just did an archive of about a century's worth of family photographs, and bought 10 of these drives for the transfer. Not a huge investment, but I wanted the easiest, simplest, fastest, and most durable USB drive I could find, so I researched on the web and came up with the Kingston product.

I'm not at all disappointed. I've worked with a lot of different USB drives before, and the data transfer from my desktop to the Kingston was noticeably faster than any other drive I've used.

The retractable interface is a huge improvement over the models with caps (which I seem to lose almost immedately).

I highly recommend this product.

This is perfect, I am saving old photos and this is what I needed. I like it because you don't have to keep up with the cover it retracts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kingston Flash Drive, April 13, 2009

I like Kingston flash drives. I have several. I don't like that the connector slides in with no cover. I'm worried about dust getting in. But as it's only 2GB, I just use this one for my digital picture frame so it's always plugged in. It's not something to record files on and stick in your pocket.
