5.0 out of 5 stars A True Thumb Drive
This thing is amazing. Of all the USB drives I've ever owned, this one takes the cake. It's small, it's strong, and it's got an insane profile. This thing has no crevices for dirt and dust to get lodged in; it stays clean and functional, and has no moving parts you need to worry about. In fact, I actually keep this puppy in my wallet! I plug it in to my Mac and Linux...

1.0 out of 5 stars Be careful! Very fragile device!
I bought this (16GB version) because it was inexpensive and small - just what I wanted. And it was a Kingston product, very reliable brand. Boy, was I wrong! I'm an IT professional and a very careful user. I've always carried the device well protected, despite the fact that it doesn't even have a protective cap. 3 weeks after purchase, it just stoped working. I checked...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great little drive, November 13, 2008
This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler Mini Slim 4 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive DTMS/4GB (Black) (Personal Computers)
This is an awesome drive for the size. It is absolutely tiny and you get 4 gigs. My wife asked for a small flash drive with no cap and this one was the winner. She can put it on her key chain and not even worry about the size. The drive does have some drawbacks. It is slower than other fancy drives. Also, because it's just one piece of plastic, you can insert it into the USB slot backwards. They should have thought of this and made the connectors on BOTH sides, but they didn't so you have to be careful. Also, the LED light that shows the drive in operation is set on one side, so sometimes, if the front is facing you, you can't even see it. The small annoyances are far outweighed by the size and simplicity. It's sooo small, you have to work on not losing it. I got the blue one, just so I can find it easier. Great little flash drive.

This thing has no crevices for dirt and dust to get lodged in; it stays clean and functional, and has no moving parts you need to worry about. In fact, I actually keep this puppy in my wallet! I plug it in to my Mac and Linux machines, run a quick rsync script to update my encrypted files, and pop it back in my wallet for travel.

What's more, I'll be getting another one of a different color for a different (massive) set of software/development files I want available for travel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tiny, and Great for the Price, November 16, 2008

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler Mini Slim 4 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive DTMS/4GB (Black) (Personal Computers)
This tiny device does everything I would expect a flash drive to do. I used it as a bootable drive to install an OS, but, hey, that's just me. Of course you can use it for whatever you want, just like you'd think. I found the read/write time to be quite fast enough. I don't remember how long it took to transfer 600 mB of info, but I know it seemed really fast, much fast than transferring pictures from my camera to my computer. That is my only other file transfer through USB experience.

It is minuscule and I like the sleek form. It does lack the metal housing around the connector that are on most USB devices, so there is nothing to protect it if you lean on it. I can see why it would break if you're not careful, but I don't think that it's flimsy per se. It does have a hole for a key ring, but I wouldn't store it with my keys for its own protection.

It doesn't feel cheaply made, but I give it the same care I'd give any small piece of electronic hardware. If you need durable, you can buy a USB flash drive housed in titanium! No, seriously, you can. If you just want a no frills, sleek, reasonably priced storage device, look no further.

I'm an IT professional and a very careful user. I've always carried the device well protected, despite the fact that it doesn't even have a protective cap. 3 weeks after purchase, it just stoped working. I checked the pins throughfully and found a small crack, so small it was almost invisible to the naked eye. The device did not fall nor was forced in any way. Kingston says that it was misused and therefore guarantee is voided. It wasn't misused, it just really has flaws in its conception. Do not buy this, it will definitely break as it is just TOO fragile even to regular use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for adding BD-Live capability to Sony Blu-Ray player, February 21, 2009

I bought it to add BD-Live capability to my Sony BDP-S350 Blu-Ray player. The player has a limited clearance connector that prevents most thumb drives from fitting. This one fits great, and provides a very cost-effective way of getting the required memory.

This little drive is very useful and convenient. The size allows for easy transportation. It can easily be stored on your keyring without adding any extra weight and adding no real bulk.

Although it is small, Kingston was able to make a decently sturdy design that does have transfer rates at true 2.0 speed.

Kingston was able to squeeze in a small green notification light at the top of the device. It's inside the loop that connects to the keyring.

It is a great size, convenient to carry, and no loss of performance; it is a great buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars We'll see how it goes..., July 4, 2009

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler Mini Slim 4 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive DTMS/4GB (Black) (Personal Computers)
This is my first "dedicated" flash drive...but have used mp3 players and cameras that function the same.

My main concern is dependability and reliability...sort of pointless to have something that might lose your data for you..or get lost?

I wanted to potentially carry this on a keyring...but I know how rough this can be on things. It will need to be on a lanyard or keyring or in a wallet to avoid loss?

I did find a tight fitting vinyl "cap" to use on the USB end...that I'm pretty sure will stay on and prevent wear damage. These are used in automotive and hydraulics as vac and dust caps.

* This did not work out..the vinyl is sticky and cracked the plastic around the contacts...super-glued it back. Now use a section of rubber hose.

Seems to be solidly made...though the "eyelet" part at the top is a bit thin. There is an LED on the end so you know when it is active.

This flash drive does have some software on it (a kind of mini OS?)...but I find it of little real use and will probably reformat the drive to FAT32. There are a few tech reviews on this drive...some saying it is fairly fast...and some saying it is slow...so who knows?

After I reformatted to FAT32 (after saving the included files)...I was able to transfer 530 mbs of data to the drive in 2 minutes...~4.4 mb/s...seems fast enough to me.

This flash drive has turned out to be pretty durable...it's not on a keyring all the time...but when using the rubber tube on the contact end...it holds up well.

Needed an inexpensive small USB drive to occupy the tight USB slot on the back of my Blu-ray player (a Sony BDP-S350). This fit the bill perfectly. Enables BD-Live functionality for my player.
