Why choose a USB 3.0 drive?

DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 G2

USB 3.0 is the next major revision to the Universal Serial Bus (USB). It offers the same ease-of-use and plug and play capabilities as previous generations of USB technologies but with a 10X performance increase and better power management. For users of USB 3.0, the goal of connecting devices to PCs or notebooks is still the same as the USB 2.0 specification.

USB 3.0 helps you save more time and USB 3.0 drives transfer files faster than USB 2.0 drives. Depending on the number of channels and the transfer speeds, USB 3.0 can save you up to 26 minutes with a HD movie transfer compared to standard USB 2.0 drives.

Put USB 3.0 to work with DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 G2 — and save yourself some time!

Take advantage of all the performance improvements of USB 3.0 with Kingston’s DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 G2 Flash drive. It’s available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacities and is handy and easily transportable.

Easily store and quickly transfer your:
  • HD video
  • System backup
  • Hi-res photos
  • Photoshop, Premiere, Lightroom and other Adobe applications and much more.

This USB 3.0 Flash drive is backwards compatible with USB 2.0. NOTE: DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 G2 is backwards compatible with USB 2.0* but in order to take advantage of USB 3.0 technology, you will need a system with a USB 3.0 port.

*Does not support ReadyBoost.

It has performed well using either the 2.0 or 3.0 USB ports.

Copying lots of very small files (word documents, Eudora data) through very large files (huge zip files), the drive is great.

I wanted high quality reliable drives and these impressed me so much that I purchased 2 more for my own use.

Since I work in an office environment where the Windows OS is in limited privileges, I make heavy use of Portable Apps and am no stranger to buying USB keys. Even running in USB 2.0 (at work), this drive is leaps and bounds over any drive I have purchased recently. While the discontinued Throttle and discontinued 8GB GT drives were lightning fast, I have had a spate of very bad 64GB purchases recently which, while patriotic, were horrendous (including huge CPU overhead and extremely slow small file copy).

Anyway, this drive absolutely flies. Copying lots of very small files (word documents, Eudora data) through very large files (huge zip files), the drive is great. For those intending to run Portable Apps within a Truecrypt container, even in USB 2.0, it is leaps and bounds ahead of any other drive I have owned.

I am extremely glad I purchased this drive.

Update: 2 years now with nearly daily use with no problems whatsoever.

As I hoped, multiple tests (from 1GB to 50GB files) have proven out the specs provided (100MB/s read 73MB/s write for USB 3.0 and 32MB/s both ways for USB 2.0).

Since I use/assist so many different pc's, it is SUPER handy having 64GB with me at all times.

I did reformat it to be NTFS (for a more robust file system and to handle large files).

It can get rather warm after transferring 50GB at once, but not alarmingly so.

Tucked away inside the instructions is a teeny tiny lanyard (one of the smallest I have ever seen). It worked just right for my situation (I have my house key on it).

It has a 5 year warranty (see comments for link)

Only 2 of the PCs that I interact with have USB 3.0 now, but that will change with time, so I have stopped buying 2.0 whenever a 3.0 alternative exists.

It comes in handy for bringing movies and tv shows to watch on my notebook (or phone) while on vacation (my notebook has a rather small SSD).

I decided to check out this drive after being supremely disappointed with several other supposed USB 3.0 drives, and this one blew me away. I used four test groups on both USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports. The test groups were pictures (460 mb), music (4 gb), 24-minute videos (8.5 gb), and a single 4 gb video. Here were my results:

USB 3.0 Write Speeds
Pictures - 15.8 mb/s
Music - 45.3 mb/s
Short Videos - 54.8 mb/s
Single Video - 80.9 mb/s

And those are write speeds! Read speeds were over 100 mb/s.

USB 2.0 Write Speeds
Pictures - 11.3 mb/s
Music - 24.0 mb/s
Short Videos - 24.6 mb/s
Single Video - 28.2 mb/s

Read speeds were just over 30 mb/s. This drive's write speeds are faster on 2.0 than some of the other 3.0 drives I've tested.

As you can see, the results have been incredible. I bought this drive with skepticism, as I found the claims of its speed hard to believe given past experience, but I've never been happier to be wrong.

I know I'll get beat up for posting something negative, but the facts don't lie.

I posted a screen snapshot of a benchmark on my computer using this flash drive.

My motherboard (Asus P6X58D Premium) has two USB 3.0 ports. MB has the latest BIOS. Ubuntu 11.04 supports USB 3.0. The Disk Utility states that the connection speed is "USB at 705MB/s".

The benchmarked and real-world read speeds are significantly faster than 100MB/s but the write speeds are awfully slow; far slower than any USB 2.0 device that I own (even the cheapo 4GB DataTraveler G3 that I bought in bulk).

I contacted Kingston tech support. They are not aware of any conflicts with my Asus motherboard. He thinks that I received a defective drive. I'll return it to Amazon and try again.

Edit: I received a replacement drive. Again, incredibly fast read speeds (200MB/s) but awfully slow write speeds. I returned the drive.

Also, the drives are very wide. In my case, I cannot put two of them together on my motherboard so I could not copy data from one drive to another.

On my Win7/64 system this drive reads very quickly, but can write very slowly when lots of small files are present. But, this could be a Windows issue - don't know. It is about twice the thickness of many drives and can get quite hot.

This wasn't my first choice, but I'm glad that I have it. I originally purchased the Corsair Flash Voyager GT 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive. Man did it look and feel nice! That rubber coating is a great idea. It would have been better yet if they had a quality product, like the Kingston Digital DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 Generation 2 64 GB Flash Drive DTU30G2/64GB inside instead of that piece of junk Corsair. I returned it after getting about 5 GB of personal data on it, only to find that it locked up on me and all of my data was inaccessible and there is no solution. I couldn't even format it to keep them from having my personal data.

I am very happy with the feel and performance of the KINGSTON DIGITAL DATATRAVELER ULTIMATE 3.0 GENERATION 2 64GB FLASH DRIVE. I have confidence that my data isn't going anywhere that I don't want it to go and I expect to have and use it for years to come.

MAKE THIS ONE YOUR FIRST CHOICE!!!

UPDATE: September 23, 2013

It's now about a year and a half later and can tell you, without a doubt, that the KINGSTON DIGITAL DATATRAVELER ULTIMATE 3.0 GENERATION 2 64GB FLASH DRIVE is a very reliable Flash Drive. Other than not being able to backup my whole system (due to drive space), I have not found an occasion where this drive has not exceeded expectations. It has performed well using either the 2.0 or 3.0 USB ports. There is no need to look any further for a good, reliable Flash Drive.
