5.0 out of 5 stars Good value.
The flash drive's retractable USB connector is very useful for those that tend to lose the dust cap that comes with many other drives. The price was also less than similar devices for other manufacturers.

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler I Generation 2 - 8 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive DTIG2/8GB (Blue) (Personal Computers)
When I bought this thumb drive I wanted a few specific things:

1) No cap, because in my experience they always get lost.
2) >= 8gb of storage at a reasonable price.
3) Some way to link to a key chain.

The drive by description and pictures on amazon filled all of these specifications:

1) Slide lock design, the end retracts for protection and there is no cap.
2) 8gb and less than $20.
3) A small hole at the end, not quite as big as i'd like, but it still worked.

My main problem is the cheap design of the enclosure. The plastic forming the hole at the end broke on mine, meaning I can no longer have it attached to my key chain and I have to put it inside the bag, meaning I forget it sometimes. I suggested to my girlfriend that she get the same one while mine was still on the way, so she did. Her drive was even worse, the entire enclosure split in two, and now all we have left is the USB end and the chip that the memory is on, bare to the world.

I wish amazon had the option to post pictures.(Edit: I was mistaken here, they do have the option to post pictures and I did post some.)

I would highly recommend finding something a little sturdier if you plan on taking this drive with you anywhere, if you are just using it for say file transfers between machines at home/work id say go for it.

I prefer this to the SanDisk because it doesn't bring up that weird U3 program. Seems well made, the drive retreats securely into the handle, quick to boot up. It doesn't "eject" properly so far (the error message comes up even if all files are closed) but that doesn't seem to be affecting its performance in any way. A great buy for the price.

Nice and compact. I like Kingston's sliding system better than SanDisk's. Easier and feels securer. I cannot comment on durability, because I don't use this every day. I bought this mainly to store lots of files.

What can you say about a flash drive except that it works. I agree with other reviewers that it seems a bit flimsy. I have a SanDisk Cruzer and like the overall design better but the constant flashing light when it's inserted drives me crazy.

Price was good. Easy to use. I've dropped it several times with no problems. It came in the mail fast. I have no complaints.

I'm a bit disappointed in how flimsy this thumbdrive feels. It has a rattling lightweight plastic case that feels like it could snap in half if handled too roughly. Large capacity drives have gotten so cheap it's amazing, there are lots of drives to choose from at this price point. This one feels like a toy but performs just fine. I haven't tried to benchmark it yet and no matter how it does I'm not sure I'd recommend it to anyone. It just feels too lightweight and breakable and there is no activity light.

I got a 4GB (fried egg color) for myself and a blue 8GB for my wife. They are identical except for the color and capacity. Kingston is a trusted brand so I'm not worried about their performance but I am concerned about durability.

All that being said, I have to admit I kind of like the fact that this drive is unique in its toy-like look and feel. As a previous reviewer said, "it looks like you got it in a gum machine" - excellent way to describe it.

edited to add: sorry, there actually is an activity light, very dim but once you realize it's there its nice to have. It is under the white plastic and barely shines through it, in the front near the USB connector.

This flash drive feels very flimsy compared to my older drives. My Microsoft Money program backup will not download into it due to limitations of Microsoft so at this time, it is not as usable as I had wanted. So even though it is 8GB, I will still need to carry another drive for Microsoft Money - at least until I throw in the towel on Money.
