Not USB 3.0 speed !

The build quality is nice; I like that you can protect the USB connection by sliding the cover.

UPDATE: This vendor has raised the price on this budget Kingston 32GB USB 3.0 drive from the $20 I paid. At the higher price, there are better choices, including the ADATA S102. I have never been an ADATA fan, but user reviews, particularly better Crystal Disk Mark speeds, would be enough for me to overcome my usual doubts about ADATA.
======
UPDATE 2: --> Warning, I recommend that you do NOT reformat to NTFS. <-- Shortly after I did that and then added lots of video files, this USB flash drive somehow went into permanent READ ONLY mode. I have tried dozens of different tips and solutions from the internet to fix this apparently common problem and wasted a lot of time in doing so. NONE OF THEM WORK. I now simply cannot write to or format this USB flash drive.
======

USB drives get cheaper or faster. USB 3.0 flash drives are faster but often at twice the cost of good USB 2.0 flash drives especially at sizes like 64GB. For routine storage use, good USB 2.0 drives are still the better deal and are certainly the best option for all (USB 2.0 only) tablets and many notebooks/PCs.

The Kingston DT111 is the first USB 3.0 drive at 32GB from a reputable manufacturer in the $20 budget pricing territory.

I could not find any speed specification on the Kingston site for this USB 3.0 flash drive. Neither could I find speed information from any other vendor site until I stumbled upon one in Malaysia. The quoted Malaysian vendor speed shown was 70MB/s write and 30 MB/s write. That is good but not great speed for USB 3.0 read but exceptionally good USB 3.0 write speed (at this price). So, I took a gamble and ordered this Kingston "budget" USB 3.0 drive.

SpeedOut_0.5 ... Read = 35.211mb/s; Write = 17.803mb/s.
Real world ... I average ~7mb/sec.
This drive is actually slower than my budget 32gb Toshiba 2.0 key for write speeds.
Do not buy for 'USB 3.0' speeds

Averages 5MB/sec on sequential writes of large files on my USB 3 ports. This is a very poor USB 3 experience. The problem is the USB stick, not my USB3 ports. Using the same computer and USB3 ports with a USB3 hard disk, I get over 100MB/sec, but this flash drive only runs at 5MB/s. Very disappointing.

Really not happy with the USB 3.0 advertisement. Yes it does have the blue connection but this drive has no where near the speed it should. For me, when writing to the drive, it starts off at 30MB/s (same as my USB 2.0) and then drops off to 8MB/s within about 10 seconds.

If you want a decent 3.0 USB drive, make sure you read reviews. Oh, and don't buy this one.

Let me first state that I have an Asus UX32VD laptop running Win7 64 bit with a SSD and 10GB of ram. I also have multiple western digital 3.0 USB harddrives and also a sandisk extreme USB 3.0 gb thumb drive. I bought this because it was on a sale price at a local store, and expected big things.....

This USB is by far the slowest device I have ever used in the last 5 years. My 4tb external writes and reads significantly faster, and the external is almost at 100% full capacity. This device is significantly slower than many of my usb 2.0 flash storage devices.

When transfering a 6GB file to the drive, it started at 100mb/s for the first few seconds, then progressively began to crawl. over 15 minutes later, and an average write speed of 4 mb/s it was finished. I will be going through the processes to try and get my money back on this. I would warn everybody against buying this jump drive, and I know that I will stay away from any kingston products for the rest of my life.

Hello Gerald,
I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support. Please understand that the DT111 is an entry-level USB 3.0 compliant drive and does not offer high transfer rates. If yo are looking for a performance USB 3.0 drive, please consider our DTR30 ot DTU30G3 which offer 70MB/s write in USB 3.0 ports. For further assistance, please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I or another available Technician will assist you. Please be sure to have the part in question on hand when you call.

Thank you for selecting Kingston as your upgrade partner.

I just broke it in half out of frustration with both the drive and Kingston customer service.
All of my USB 2.0 drives are faster than this when plugged into either 2.0 or 3.0

Outside of freebie flash drives this is the first I've owned that wasn't a SanDisk. The write speed on this is USB 2.0 and it often disconnects during transfers. Don't think I'll purchase or recommend Kingston.

Hello, I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support and would like to offer our support. The DT100G3 is an entry-level USB 3.0 drive and offers 10MB/s write with a 40MB/s read speed. If you are looking for a performance USB 3.0 drive, please consider our DTR30/16GB which offers 30MB/s write with a 70MB/s read in USB 3.0 ports. We also have faster drives available in larger capacities such as the DTHX30/64GB with 135MB/s write and 225MB/s read or the DTU30G3/32GB at 70MB/s write and 150MB/s read. Since the drive you recieved is also experiencing connection issues there may be an issue with that particular drive. We stand by all our products and can replace it under it's five year warranty. Please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I or another available Technician will assist you. Please be sure to have the part in question on hand when you call.

Thank you for selecting Kingston as your upgrade partner.

Device did not work in USB3 Ports. I even worked with Kingston for a replacement, which was a newer model.
It did not work either. It only plugs into my USB2 ports, while my portable hard drives are USB3 and work fine.
(The portable hard drives are not Kingston, but Toshiba and Western Digital)

Support for Kingston wasn't all that friendly either, but I did get an RMA easily... too bad it didn't help me out.

Hello Jon,
I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support. The DT111 USB drive is a USB 3.0 compliant drive and if it was replaced with another drive it would have been comparable like the DT100G3. Both these drives are USB 3.0 complaint and should work in USB 3.0 ports. I would advise to check for any updates for your USB ports or any chipset or BIOS updates for your system as that can affect what is detected by the computer. We are here to help and can further troubleshoot with you as the replacement did not change the situation. Please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I or another available Technician will assist you. Please be sure to have the part in question on hand when you call.

Thank you for selecting Kingston as your upgrade partner.
