It's awesome, I carry it anywhere with my keys.

To start with, the build of the drive is good enough with the majority being made of thin aluminum.

Very compact and light weight, therefore feels flimsy.

From the first few hours I've been using (and abusing) the DTM30 I would have to say the drive is a solid purchase at the current price of $8. I don't think you can go wrong at that price. This drive doesn't manage to do anything special but it's decent in most aspect.

To start with, the build of the drive is good enough with the majority being made of thin aluminum. While the thinness of the aluminum might seem worrisome at first there's actually very little bend in it. The end of the stick is raised plastic with a small hole to go on a keyring or similar. Due to the size of the hole and the square edges of the plastic cap it can be a bit hard to get on a keyring but once it's on it doesn't feel like it's going to come off.
Design-wise the DTM30 feels like a step back from the DTSE9. While the DTSE9 feels like it could survive being run over by a truck I wouldn't be so sure about the DTM30. The DTM30 is also slightly longer (less than half a centimeter) and slightly lighter (due to the lower build quality).

In regard to performance the drive gets about what's it's advertised when being written to but when read from outperforms the listed specs. From my testing the drive tends to be at just below 10 MB/s Write but upwards of 120 MB/s Read. For most average uses that's not bad, not great as far as USB 3.0 goes but much better read speeds than USB 2.0 can provide. The 10 MB/s Write speeds are about on par with a lot of USB 2.0 drives and seem to match up with what the DTSE9 gets.

Overall I would say that the DTM30 is good, solid unit and worth buying if you're in the market for a USB 3.0 drive to stick on your keyring or you just want a cheap drive with decent build quality and aren't too concerned about write speeds. Though if you're not too concerned about the drive speed in general and just want something solid you might consider looking at the Kingston DTSE9 which has higher build quality for about the same price.

This Kingston 16 gb USB 3.0 Mini flash drive is great, but I would not exactly call it "mini." It is actually about 2 inches long, and sticks out from whatever device you have it plugged into quite a ways. It definatly is not for portable devices that you would want to leave the drive in. But, on the other hand, it is a Kingston, one of the best flash drives made.

I wanted a USB 3-speed flash drive to replace my DT SE9. I absolutely LOVE my Data Traveler SE9. It is by far, the sexiest, most durable USB drive I have ever used.

I was hoping that those would be the adjectives I'd use to describe the DT mini. Sadly, not so much.

The DT mini isn't bad, it really isn't. But it doesn't live up to the legacy. The metal is easily bent, and the opening on the plastic base isn't even big enough to use on a normal key ring... which is actually a good thing, since if you sit on your keys, they'll bend the metal anyway.

On the bright side, since it wasn't on my keys, it ended up getting put through the washing machine. Once I found it, I threw it in a bag of rice and let it sit overnight. When I tried using it again, It had some weird formatting errors. Windows wouldn't work with it, but a little work in GParted in Linux got it working good as new. That says something about the durability of the internals.

Come on, Kingston! I know you've got it in you to make a USB3 SE9! Do it for America!

Bought as a replacement for the DataTraveler SE9 I lost. Faster than that model which is only USB2 (and slow even taking that in to account) but this one is not nearly as solid in construction (thinner metal, not all one piece) and the keyring hole feels flimsy. Speed wise it's a big improvement, not the fastest but not noticeably slow like the SE9.

Hello, I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support. We apologize for the misunderstanding, the DTM30 is an entry-level USB 3.0 drive and does not offer encryption. Thank you for bringing this to our attention and I will make sure to have the product description corrected. If you are looking for a USB 3.0 encrypted drive, please consider out DTLPG3/16GB. For any further assistance, please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I or another available Technician will assist you.

Thank you for selecting Kingston as your upgrade partner.
First off if you're looking to buy a thumb drive these are a fine choice. Be sure to check the different sizes even if you only need and 8 GB drive Amazon pricing can be really crazy and I've seen 16 GB drives for only three dollars more than an 8 GB. So just flip through them before you throw one in your cart.

One last thing before I explain the process of formatting for your Mac. Be sure to get the biggest drive you can afford, because as everything goes more digital you're gonna need that space in the future.

These drives will work on both Mac and PC But if you're working completely in a Mac environment you might want to reformat it to Mac OS extended file format. It's more secure than the "fat 32" filesystem that most flash drives use.

If you want to reformat this drive for your Mac just follow the steps below.

1. Plug in the the drive
2. Open up disk utility found in your applications folder inside the utilities folder
3. Next select the newly plugged in a drive and on the right-hand side you should see partition click on that.
4. Then inside that screen on the partition layout drop-down choose how many partitions you'd like to set up. I generally go with one partition and just use folders to organize my files.
5. Then on the right-hand side you can name the partitions and select the format. If you are transferring video files I highly recommend you choose Mac OS Extended if your are exclusively a Mac user as it can handle files over 4GB. Sometimes it's good to make two partitions and one using "MS-DOS fat" or "ExFat" if you might be transferring files to and from a Windows machine.
