DTR3.0 is backed by a five-year warranty and legendary Kingston® reliability.

From the Manufacturer

Why choose a USB 3.0 drive?

DataTraveler R3.0

USB 3.0 is the next major revision to the Universal Serial Bus (USB). It offers the same ease-of-use and plug and play capabilities as previous generations of USB technologies but with a 10X performance increase and better power management. For users of USB 3.0, the goal of connecting devices to PCs or notebooks is still the same as the USB 2.0 specification.

USB 3.0 helps you save more time and USB 3.0 drives transfer files faster than USB 2.0 drives. Depending on the number of channels and the transfer speeds, USB 3.0 can save you up to 26 minutes with a HD movie transfer compared to standard USB 2.0 drives.

Get up to speed with DataTraveler R3.0!

Take advantage of all the performance improvements of USB 3.0 with Kingston’s DataTraveler R3.0 Flash drive. It’s available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacities to give you the ability to have even your largest files right at your fingertips. Plus, this latest addition to Kingston’s USB 3.0 Flash drive product line is rugged, handy and easily transportable so you’ll want to take it everywhere.

DataTraveler R3.0 features speeds up to 70MB/s read and 30MB/s write (for USB 3.0) to save an estimated 22 minutes (based on internal testing) when transferring a 1080p full HD video, as compared to the same transfer on a standard 2.0 drive.

This high-performance yet cost-effective USB 3.0 Flash drive is also durable, with a rugged, shock-resistant rubber casing to keep all of your data safe, wherever your adventures take you. To maximize your current and future computer investments, DTR3.0 is backwards compatible with USB 2.0.

NOTE: DataTraveler R3.0 is backwards compatible with USB 2.0 but in order to take advantage of USB 3.0 technology, you will need a system with a USB 3.0 port.

Pros: Very fast transfer rates.

Some are also made of a flimsy rubberized casing that will bend under force and fail to protect the circuitry.

Good performance, great looks, and Kingston brand / reliability.

By professional reasons, I usually need a lot of memory capacity in flash drives.
When I buy a new one, I have 3 concerns:
1. It must be shock resistant. This Kingston structure is made in rubber and, when it falls, it jumps instead of break;
2. It can't be slow, especially for writing. I had a 32GB Patriot Xporter, an excellent memory. I think this Kingston 128GB is a little faster both for reading and writing;
3. As much as possible, it is desirable that the flash drive has some protection against water. This Kingston has a cap that really closes it and protects from water and other liquids. I'd not say it is totally waterproof but, if it drops in water for a short period of time, it will not be damaged.
Is it cheap? Sure it is not. But you get what you pay for. Everything cosidered, I think the price is fair.

There's a huge choice in USB drives these days. The most common thing that people overlook is that beyond fancy packaging and memory size, not all USB drives are created equal. Most USB drives read/write at rates of 10mb/5mb. If you don't transfer large numbers of files or multi-gigabyte files, this is perfectly fine. However, if you do find yourself wanting better performance, then it's time to upgrade to the R500.

The general pricing of standard Kingston 16Gb USB drives is about $8-$10 cheaper than the R500, yet, the R500 is 3 to 4 times faster, reading at 30Mb and writing at 20Mb. This makes an ENORMOUS difference if transferring many files or very large ones. Last but not least, if you utilize the ReadyBoost* feature in Windows, you'll have much better performance with a faster USB device. The price difference really ends up paying back in the long run, as you'll be more productive every time you use it. It's a no-brainer choice!

Some of the casings on USB drives are hard plastic that will crack/chip if dropped or struck hard. Some are also made of a flimsy rubberized casing that will bend under force and fail to protect the circuitry. The R500 has a thick firm rubberized casing that is slightly flexible. This makes it very easy to drop and bang the drive without causing damage. I loaded mine with a bunch of files, picked it up and then slammed it down on a hard floor (with cap on). The R500 survive without a scratch and all files were still present. The cap is a little loose when placed on the back end, but it's not so bad that it'll easily fall off when the drive is mounted.

Pros
- FAST
- FAST!
- Did i mention fast?
- Rugged
- Reliable
- Stands out
- Idiot proof

Cons
- Bigger then standard USB
- Cap doesn't stay on the back securely

First up, lightening fast. It lives up to the advertised speed, unlike most USB drives. It's rugged case means throwing this baby around is a planned exercise, not a feared annoyance. The only issue i have is it is bigger then a normal drive, meaning a slight inconvenience for some people with tight spaces for USB slots. This was fine for me however. The cap sits on the back while in use, but i slight agitation and it can fall off.

I would have to say the best thing about this USB is the colour scheme. It's incredibly easy to identify on a busy desk, which is ideal for someone like me working in an office environment. When im in a rush, I just scan the horizon for a orange piece of brilliance and alas, I find my lost companion. Same goes with the cap, if it falls off no worries, you'll find it ;)

As a demonstration to friends I ask them to drop their USB in the floor. They all protest against it, so I say fine i'll go first. I'll throw this device at the ground with enough force to make it bounce a good meter or 2. Everyone cringes as they see me going through the motions, until they hear the soft thud it makes as it absorbs the impact and they are all amazed. It is a GREAT USB, near perfection.

SUMMARY: It's an average unit at an average price with a 5 yr warranty and free tech support and looks cool with non-smelly velvet texture from a great company - one of my favorites - recommended. DETAILS: Busy lives mean you have less time to wait around for data to move! USB-3 ("super-speed USB", or SS-USB) has arrived with the new electronics standard advertising (potentially) 10x the maximum speed of USB-2 (5000 Mbps vs. 480 Mbps). It's rare to see that full speed yet (initial USB-3 products were about 2x USB-2), but developers continue to squeeze more speed from their products. The Samsung Story 2TB USB-3 external hard disk drive on a fully-capable USB-3 PC port hits 6x the USB-2 maximum (hard drive to hard drive, transfering a 6GB DVD movie in one minute, a CD in 6 seconds, or 100MB per second). So how does this new Kingston USB-3 capable (USB-2 compatible) memory stick rate? After reformatting mine to NTFS, pretty much as advertised at the Kingston web site: USB 3.0: 70MB/s read, 30MB/s write and USB 2.0: 30MB/s read, 25MB/s write. Most "cheap" $5 USB-2 sticks are lucky to reach the Windows ReadyBoost minimum speed of 5MB per second, with many far slower. This is Kingston's new "mid-range" offering and, like hard drives, is priced accordingly based on speed and size (pay more, get more). The rubbery coating provides drop protection and it does not smell bad like some cheap rubber products (thanks!). It has a velvet-like texture - very unique - and looks nice and makes a good conversation piece. It has an activity LED near the lanyard hole, comes with lanyard, and the cap fits snuggly on the front and back (a bit less snug with lanyard).Read more ›
