I bought this drive as part of the amazon deal of the day on kingston products a few days ago. A few reviews mentioned slow write speeds around 10MB/s which while nothing special(usb 2.0 speeds) was okay for the price and read speeds of around 70MB/s which is a big speed improvement over usb 2.0 drives.

Well my drive showed up today and I loaded around 3GB of video files on it and I see the transfer speed is much better than 10MB/s and is actually averaging around 38MB/s.

For $13 shipped that's very good performance for a value drive. It's not up their with top of the line drives that get twice that read write speed or more but it was a pleasant surprise to see such good write speeds.

I ordered the 16GB drive to just have an extra to let people borrow one without having to worry so much about getting it back or losing it. I ordered this one and a 32GB drive at the same time.

The first drive I got wouldn't work as soon as I received it. When the flash drive was placed in the computer it stated that the drive needed to be formatted before use and then when I tried to format the drive (full format or quick) it failed the formatting. Tried it on my 2 home computers and 4 different work computers all with the same result. The 32GB drive worked without a problem and still works 3 months later.

Amazon had no problem with replacing the flash drive quickly.

The second I used once and went to use it a second time and it had the same problem as the first. I didn't even bother to have it returned again because I will not buy a Kingston drive for a while again. If the quality on the smaller drives is this bad I'm just glad the 32GB one worked like it should and I will quit while I am ahead.

According to the specs, the data transfer speeds for USB 2.0 and 3.0 can get up to 60MB/s and 625 MB/s, respectively. This Kingston DTIG4 has read and write speeds of roughly 30MB/s and 10MB/s only, respectively.

I have several Kingston USB drives that are still working quite well after several years, so in my experience, Kingston USB drives have been very reliable.

Kingston USB drives go on sale here frequently enough. This 16GB drive, for example, recently went for less than 9 bucks, so if you check for prices every now and then, you could find good deals!

If you really need higher speeds, check out the Kingston DTR30 (the read and write speeds are roughly 70MB/s and 30MB/s, respectively)

I have USB 2 flash drives that are faster. Transfer write speed on USB 3 was 9MBps and read was 50MBps. Complete trash, don't waste your money.

Hello, I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support. Please understand the DTIG4 is an entry level USB 3.0 device designed to work properly in USB 3.0 ports offering basic transfer speeds. If you are looking for a performance USB 3.0 drive, please consider our DTR30 which offers 70MB/s read with 30MB/s write or jump up to our DTHX30 which offers 225MB/s read with 135MB/s write. Not even close to 3.0 speed. Do not know what they did, writing speed on this thing is really slow.
Speed is slower than good usb 2.0 device.

I really do not understand why they put USB 3.0 in its name.

I understand that I have not read spec carefully. (I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one)

If you are looking for high capacity flash drive, this is not a good choice. Just spend little more money and get different one.

The DTIG4 is an entry-level USB 3.0 compliant drive and does not offer high performance transfer speeds. I saw this flash drive advertised at USB 3, so I thought I'd try it out. I find it to be bulky and very slow at writing, but acceptable at reading.

The device is pretty bulky. It is just over 1/4 inch thick, 2 inches long, and .75 inches wide. That is a bit large to be convenient on the key ring. Kingston makes a number of really great smaller flash drives (such as the Kingston Digital DataTraveler SE9) that are far more portable. It has a large plastic ring at one end to attach to a key ring. The thickness of the drive means that I could not mount two of them on my computer (if I wanted to) - they are too thick.

But in any case it should have good transfer speeds, at least. Or maybe not; I found that on a USB 3 connection it transferred at a maximum of 14 mb/second, and read at 300 mb/sec. The problem is that the USB 2 speeds were almost the exact same for writing, but a bit slower at reading (200 mb/sec). As a reference check, I wrote the same files out to my USB 3 external hard disk, and it showed 70 mb/sec write and about 500/sec read. The bottom line is that it basically writes much the same in USB 2 and 3, while being better at reading.

There is a cap covering the USB connector end, which means that it might be somewhat water resistant - but that is not advertised.

The device carries a 5 year warranty.

Summary: There are better choices out there (even from Kingston) that are thinner and just about as fast. I suppose if you don't want to lose the flash drive, that might be an advantage. Not really recommended.

Made a choice toward this model after reading other reviews claiming 10 Mb/s write. Purchased x3 of them. Testing shows 5 Mb/s sustained, which means almost 1/2 hour to fill it. With small files the time doubles. My 3-yrs old noname 2Gb drive performs twice better than this.
Feels like new cost-reduction batch after getting recognition on the market. Going to return all of them.
And one more point - it doesn't fit next to another device or cable into USB connector with standard spacing of 5/8".
