USB flash drives come in all shapes and sizes and are great for a variety of uses. One of the most common and basic uses, is toting around documents. The Kingston Locker+ G2, aims to secure those documents and make it as seamless and easy to use as possible.

PROS:
- Easy-to-use security
- Hardware encryption
- Windows and Mac compatible
- Great build quality
- Classy appearance
- 5-year warranty

CONS:
- Not super fast

BUILD & DESIGN
The Locker+ G2 is encased in metal and feels really solid, unlike many plastic USB flash drives. The silver finish looks attractive and you can attach it to a key ring via the loop in the back of the drive. The small, white piece in the middle of the drive that looks like a jumper connector, is the activity LED that glows blue when active.

The cap, which is also encased in metal, stays on nice and secure to the body of the drive. You'll have to keep track of it though, since it doesn't attach to the back end of the drive.

The build quality and appearance of the Locker+ G2 is much nicer than most USB flash drives I'm used to and Kingston backs it with a 5 year warranty and free technical support.

USAGE
If you need to carry documents on your USB flash drive securely, you can use software-based encryption tools, like TrueCrypt, but it can be cumbersome to set up and use. Using a USB flash drive with hardware encryption built in, is much easier. The Locker+ G2 uses 256-bit AES security to secure your data and all you need to use it is your password.

The first time you insert the Locker+ G2 into a PC or Mac, you'll be prompted to set up the secure data partition.

As someone responsible for data security at my company, I require all executives to use encrypted, password protected flash drives to secure their data when traveling. The data encryption, password-protection, and data wipe after ten failed password attempts provides the data security I need for our company and our senior executives.

Flash drives are easily lost, dropped out of your pocket (happened to me when I sat down in a hotel lobby chair), misplaced, forgotten in a hotel computer USB drive and they often contain volumes of private company financial information, internal letters or memos about sensitive information or company plans, private information about the executives themselves (scandals?), or human resources employee data, etc... For this reason, we only use Kingston security drives and require all senior executives to use them.

The Kingston Data Traveler locker is a very secure device, however in a way it is too secure. After connecting the drive to the system and logging in, I have found that my Windows XP system will not recognize the device as still being physically connected after I log off. This requires me to physically disconnect the drive and reconnect it to be able to log in to it again. Kingston informed me that this is the way these drives are hard-programmed, and cannot be changed. It is an inconvenience.

This is a great product. I was looking for a flash drive with easy password entry. Unlike some of the other password flash drives, this has one easy password to access the flash drive. Other flash drives have crazy systems where you have to encrypt each file or move a file into a "safe" on the drive. This is so easy to use and matched what I was looking for, a flash drive that required one password to access all the files and once entered you have access to all the files. This flash drive is also very durable with a hard metal finish unlike the cheap plastic version of most flash drives. Great price to boot. Highly recommend.

This really fills my need for a secure way to carry around office files and personal information. Using Windows 8 and a Dell XPS desktop, it was a cinch to initialize this usb memory stick and to select my password.

Then, using the computer's usb 3.0 port, I transferred 6.5 GB of data to the Data Traveler (DT from this point) in only a few minutes. Much faster than when I have tried the same thing on usb 2.0 ports. I locked the DT and rebooted the computer. Then I reinserted the DT and unlocked it. All the data files were easily accessed and they appeared to be intact. Total occupied space was the same as on the original disk.

The stainless steel case seems to be sturdy.

No serious drawbacks; only a couple I can mention. The one that matters to me is that there is not a "secure backup" for DT, and there is on IronKey. In this, the control panel has an option to backup the key's data in a secure, passwork-protected folder on the computer hard drive. And to recover data from that location onto an IronKey. Great feature, and a main reason I used to purchase IronKeys. But I can find software that will accomplish this for me, and I'll probably use another DT for the backup.

I hope Kingston will add this feature to the software. It would not be a difficult addition for them and it would make the Data Traveler even more attractive.

Less important is that on my Windows 8, the unlocking program or Launcher cannot start automatically when I insert the DT. It did start automatically on computers with earlier versions of Windows. But it started without a hitch and unlocked when I entered the password once I double clicked the file name. Now I have pinned the Launcher to the Windows 8 task bar and it is quick and simple to use.
