Nice to also have a backup battery to charge the iPhone if needed.

You can and should protect your MobileLite wireless network unless you'd like anyone in the wifi range of the device to be able to access your content.
Mike

The MobileLite has two key functions:
1. A wireless reader of SD cards or USB flash drives
2. A power bank to recharge a mobile device

As a power bank it is limited - the product data sheet mentions 1800mAh battery, which when fully charged, would suffice to fully charge an iPhone or iPod Touch, but not iPads, SGS3, SGS4 and most other high-end smartphones. So I personally wouldn't buy it for its power bank capabilities, but it is nice addition to a wireless reader if you need one.

As a wireless storage device, it is similar to Kingston's WiDrive product, but instead of the embedded memory in the WiDrive, the MobileLite comes with SD card slot, USB 2.0 interface and no memory. As such it leaves the consumer the freedom to use existing memory cards/usb drives, with the SD card slot especially useful for inserting the card from your digital camera and sharing photos via your mobile device without the need to carry with you a laptop...

To get going you simply download the app, go to the wireless settings of your mobile device and connect to the WiFi network the MobileLite is creating when turned on, and that's it. You would be able to browse content loaded to an SD card or a USB flash drive inserted to the reader.
It takes the MobileLite about 30 seconds to get up and running - a pretty long time for a flash based device.

The MobileLite is about the size of iPhone 5, but twice as thick. It has a clean design and is surprising light-weight. In the box you will find the reader, a USB cable, an SD-microSD card adapter and the quick start guide. It has 3 LEDs indicating battery status, wifi access (middle blue), and internet access (side blue).

Kingston may have hit one out of the park with this device. I've not had it for more than a week, but with some tweeks, there is some potential game changing here. The ios app that you download has some limitations. For starters, you can only read and copy files from the MobileLite using the MobileLite app. The exception to that rule seems to be for photos, which can be imported and written to a USB flash drive or SD card from the photo library. Kingston clearly does not want this device to be used as an NAS device. As the Amazon description states "Wireless Flash Reader".

I have gotten around this limitation by using an ios app called "FileExplorer", which will let me use the Mobilelite as an NAS when I enter in an IP address (get the IP address from the Mobilelite app). FileExplorer will let you write and store files on the Mobilelite and use it as an NAS device, which is what I wanted in the first place. I've moved a lot of files to a spare 32gb SD card and now used the Mobilelite as a wireless backup for my iPhone. I have even tried a USB hard drive and the Mobilelite will see that as well (Beware: MobileLite has a hard time with directories on a hard drive, so this is not a recommended use). Using flash drives and SD cards this gadget works fine.

You cannot access the MobileLite device from a PC, or at least as far as I have tried this. As I stated earlier, Kingston only intended that as a flash memory reader for an Android or IOS device and Not an NAS. Too bad.

Another nice feature is the ability to access the internet and use the MobilLite at the same time. AirStash and a number of other wireless storage devices will not let you do this. Kingston did a home run here.

Thie Kingston MobileLite Wireless SD Card reader works great as a device that gives you the ability to share, copy, and view files on an SD card, for example you can take an SD card out of a camera and view your photos on a larger tablet. The other powerful use is the ability to store large files such as presentations, movies, large audio libraries, etc. save space on your portable device, and share those files with up to 3 users simultaneously.

The MobileLite is not a tiny device, 5" long, 2.25" wide, and 5/8" thick, on one end is the SD card reader slot and when inserted the SD card is completely enclosed with a spring push to eject. On the other end of the device is a micro USB for charging the reader and standard USB that you can use for a small amount of emergency power. Don't expect to use this device as a portable battery but in a pinch you can pull out enough power to get a few more minutes out of your portable device. (if you have your charging cable with you). Near the charging port is a single power button, slightly recessed to eliminate accidental activation as well as the need to press and hold to activate or shut down the WiFi signal.

To access the device from your portable device you connect to its own WiFi SSID and using the somewhat flakey MobileLite app or over http you can configure most WiFi hotspots and use the MobileLite as an access router. I would prefer being able to set the MobileLite to join MY network but that just is not possible, you must configure your portable device to join the MobileLite network. You can set the SSID and security to meet your needs. Note the network is set to 192.168.200.0 with the router at 192.168.200.
