Editorial Reviews

The licensing and reissue gurus at Collectors' Choice Music wisely picked up this Kingston Trio two-fer, which Capitol Records originally released in 1992 before deleting it from their catalog several years later. As the Kingston Trio at Large (1959) and Here We Go Again! (1959) collectively occupied the top spot on the 1959 LP chart for half the year, it goes without saying that Bob Shane (guitar/banjo/vocals), Nick Reynolds (guitar/vocals) and Dave Guard (guitar/vocals) are heard at the peak of their popularity. While remarkable by modern standards, Kingston Trio at Large was actually the combo's third long player of the year. And it was only June! A few of the Trio's all-time classics can be found here, beginning with the jaunty politically incorrect opener "M.T.A.." The chorus' singalong-ability factor ("Oh, did he ever return...No, he never returned...") was no doubt key in making it a Top 15 pop hit (b/w "All My Sorrows"). The platter also includes a host of other staples, such as Shane's arrangement of the calypso-flavored favorite "I Bawled" and the first appearance of "Scarlet Ribbons" on a Kingston Trio LP. By comparison, the single version sounds totally different and had been created specifically for use in CBS-TV's Playhouse 90 presentation of Rumors of Evening. The overwhelming success of the Kingston Trio at Large was sealed when it scored the band their third gold platter and second Grammy for Best Folk Performance of 1959. Less than four months after the release of At Large, they sent the aptly monikered Here We Go Again! to the uppermost of the album survey for an impressive eight weeks. Plus, "A Worried Man" (b/w "San Miguel") soared into the Top 20 with its Appalachian and gospel-infused melody. As always, the collection covered a wide spectrum, from the achingly lovely rendition of "Across the Wide Missouri," to the dramatic license incorporated into the "Unforgettable Miss Bailey," or the more than slightly silly "Goober Peas." The Kingston Trio at Large and Here We Go Again! two-fer has three bonus tracks: an alternate of "A Worried Man" and the non-LP single "The Tijuana Jail" b/w "Oh Cindy." ~ Lindsay Planer, All Music Guide

4.0 out of 5 stars Collector's Choice makes a hit. December 4, 2002
Format:Audio CD
The combination of one great and one good album by the Trio is well worth the money and more. "At Large" is a great combination of authentic folk and new material. M.T.A. is one of the Trio's few original "protest" songs; "The Seine" if not authentic should be, with its haunting sound. And they do "Scarlet Ribbons" as well as Belafonte (and before he did it). "Here We Go Again" is not as good overall, but still good. Their version of "Shenandoah" ("Across The Wide Missouri") is far better than average. The authentic "San Miguel" is superb. Add to the two albums the added track of "Tiajuana Jail" and the combo is well worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Kingston Trio Collection...EVER! August 24, 2004
Format:Audio CD
I grew up listening to these two albums (thanks to my parents) and probably memorized every song on both. With all due respect to the rotating members of the Trio, over the years, I don't think anything can compare to the original Shane/Guard/Reynolds group. If your going to buy any Trio disks...get these. Period.

KT Fans: I've been in contact recently with Bob Shane who feels that the current members of the Trio come closest to the sound of the original Shane/Guard/Reynolds lineup. May be worth catching them live. Drop Bob a line...he's super nice!

4.0 out of 5 stars A great collection of Kingston Trio songs December 5, 2002
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
My dad always used to sing these songs to me, and I thought he made them up, but I found this album, and was amazed that all the songs I knew from my childhood were on this disk. It's heavy on sea shanties like Blow Ye Winds and Haul Away. They're very catchy tunes, and more refined than some of the more folksy ones like 'Round About the Mountain and Goober Peas (which I think is the song Michelle Pheiffer sings in the movie with the Bridges brothers). If you like harmonized, vocal songs with really memorable tunes and good lyrics, you'll like them. Some of the songs are covers, but they have a nice way of arranging them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Folk Music March 25, 2007
Format:Audio CD
During the late 50 and early 60's folk music was popular and there were a number of groups and musicians performing in this style. Of those groups I found I listened mostly to the Kingston Trio. While it's been more than 50 years since I bought the LP record versions of these two albums, this CD has let me enjoy them all over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two Great Albums on one CD! July 2, 2006
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I was a young child when "Here We Go Again!" came out. My dad bought the album and I listened to it growing up. I recently bought these two albums reissued on one CD, and I love it. You will find several excellent songs, such as "San Miguel," that are not usually included on "Best of" recordings of The Kingston Trio.

Buy it. You won't be disappointed.

I've always enjoyed the Kingston Trio. This cd has all the songs I like, plus some I wasn't familiar with. The only disappointment is that it didn't include "Tom Dooley".

The Kingston At Large is one of their earlier albums, with Dave Guard. Getting two of their early albums is a plus. The At Large album is one of my Kingston Trio favorites.
