My Dell Inspiron 8600 running Windows XP with 512 MB RAM worked well up until a year or so ago. The amount of memory needed to run the system gradually creeped beyond 512MB and the system spent much time paging and thrashing, with very slow response for even trivial actions. I finally bought a single 1 GB sodimm to replace one of the 256 MB modules. Now it has ~1.25 GB of RAM and doesn't need to page any more, and is very responsive.
Easy to install if you've done this kind of thing before. The included instructions are minimal, but no doubt you can google to find detailed directions on replacing memory, or consult the PC manufacturer's doc. Well worth the cost and trouble.

I read a review here, saying that 512MB RAM was shipped instead of 1GB. At first I thought this was just an accident, but the same thing happened to me and I received a 512MB RAM instead of the 1GB. Strangely, the sticker they put on the back of the package said 1GB, while the package itself (and the chip) says 512MB... A waste of time and effort. I doubt I buy from amazon anytime soon again...

I just bought the Kingston RAM to update my Dell laptop from 1GB to 2GB... The memory install was a snap, repowered my laptop and the computer now sees 2GB... My computer is much faster...
Kingston has been around for a while so I recognized the name in a good memory provider. I went to Fry's and they had a new brand called Centon, while cheaper, I had not heard anything about the brand. The salesman says it is a new brand and they do not know if people are having problems so for a few more dollars I bought Kingston (a brand that I know about). Most, of the negative reviews, seem to be of the variety of being shipped the wrong memory and not the product performance and/or reliability. I bought this same RAM in a store and know that it is a 1GB DIMM... Update: I also updated the memory in an old Dell desktop from 1GB to 2GB with the PC3200 Kingston chip... In replacing the desktop and laptop I noticed that both machines were getting a lot hotter. The laptop felt much warmer and the desktop had this foul heat smell... I did some searching on Google and there were some issues with the vendors that Kingston is specifying and their chips do get hot... It seems that there is also a similar issue in Samsung memory as well (they used similar or the same vendors)... I decided to replace all of the Kingston chips with Corsair and the computers while warmer were not that hot and the smell went away on the Dell desktop. If I was creating a new review I would give it at most a two since there was a product defect (which can lead to frying parts or a fire hazard). I wanted to like this product; I know the name but this is a serious issue...

No Stars - I ordered this product on November 29,2008. Wrong item was shipped - like one other reviewer - I received 512 instead of the 1GB. I wanted correct item shipped and was told this item is no longer available. Why is it still posted on this site? The first time Amazon has disappointed me. Now with less than 2 weeks before Christmas I have to start over and find memory for son's laptop for Christmas.

With only 512MB of RAM, my wife's Dell Inspiron 8600 had slowed down to the point where doing just about anything resulted in agonizingly long delays.
I'd done just many things to try to speed the machine up. I'd cleaned out all the spyware/adware, purged other rarely used applications, cleaned out almost 15GB of temp and other garbage files, and defragmented the drive ... all to no avail. Only after that did I realize she had a paltry 512MB of RAM on the machine, possibly enough to run her updated copy of windows, but not much else. So, after researching memory prices online a bit, I bought 2 of these (for $44 each, which was a decent price). The memory arrived exactly as described (i.e. 1GB SODIMMs) and in record time. It took all of 30 seconds to install both chips. Now the old 8600 is running like a champ! There was a noticable difference and the machine doesn't bog down or hang anymore. Thank goodness I thought to do this before shelling out big $$ for a new laptop!!

Price was too good to be true. Memory was very unstable, if my laptop was lucky enough to boot, it would crash within five minutes. Sent both 1 gig sticks back for refund. Definitely would not recommend this product.

The RAM is Double Sided,

I tried to install this RAM in my Inspiron 5100 and no Dice. Did some checking and it looks like the laptop will only accept single sided RAM. This RAM being double sided cause the laptop to not boot and just flash the lights by the power button 9 times. The package says it's tested to be 100% compliant so I'm not sure what they tested it on. Be sure to check and make sure you're laptop can accept double sided RAM.
