I was looking for a docking station but was not really wanting to have to plug in another device and run another electric plug to an outlet. My power strip is full. So I came upon this built-in hot swap unit. It is just what I needed. Looks great, easy install and seems to be built very well. But most important, it works like a charm. I have several sata drives from previous installs with alot of info on them, mainly pictures, and downloads, which I always tried to burn to disk and then tried to keep up with what was on them. Very hard to do with limited writing space on a disk. Impossible really. I end up with dozens of disks and only have a clue as to what is really on them. But I do have them, finding what I need is another matter.

Install was like any other cd-rom like device, hook up the power and sata cable in the rear and you are ready to go. Slide in a hard drive and close the door. Requires a firm but easy push to lock the door with a solid click, opens by releasing the catch and at the same time pushing the hard drive out towards you. It will not fall out on you. It has a blue light indicating it is on and a amber light when it is reading or writing info. It also has a lock to secure the device, just don't lose the keys. One other use is so I can put a bunch of movies on a hard drive and just watch them from there.

My 500GB HD will hold 100 regular dvd movies. On another drive I have 80GB of pictures and 30 GB of music, can you imagine trying to keep up with those on disk, even a blu-ray disk, you just can not write down all that is on the disk.

Now it may be my motherboard or OS but I have limited success at swapping hard drives with the computer on, so I just power down, swap and boot back. Never a problem even with an OS loaded on the extra drive.

If you are looking for a caseless 4-in-3 SATA hot swap rack for your sever that includes appropriate cooling for your HDD investment, on a budget, look no further. I am in the IT industry, and I know KingWin. They have been making caseless hot swap racks for years, and this is another good product. It works perfectly. The only issues I found with it were that the SATA ports were not labeled and that on one of the bays there was a little slack in the mechanism so you had to push the drive forward with your thumb before you close the door. Once seated, it was secured firmly. I have four of these, and only one bay on on one of the units had this issue. Which is pretty good considering that for caseless bays, mechanical issues like this are not uncommon. The depth of the unit is around 9 inches, and for minimal port and ventilation clearance you could add another 2 inches. I have a very large server to put them in, so for me, this was not an issue. The overall construction of the unit is excellent, having a sturdy feel to it. The doors and locking mechanism are pretty standard for this price range. Having said that, I have found worse on more expensive units. The fans are 120mm type, and pretty quiet considering they have no built in speed control and run at maxium speed all the time. I would not have a problem recommending these to anyone looking for these features.

For those of you who would like to save a little time, here is the port layout as viewed from the back of the unit (a previous reviewer listed this info, but listed it as seen through the front of the unit):

Style Name: 1 x 2.5" + 3.5" HDD/SSD A Verified Purchase
I had gotten tired of disassembling my case in order to recover data from a drive so I was in the market for a drive bay like this one.

Trouble was, there weren't many. Not with both a 2.5 and a 3.5 drive slot. The ones I saw were less than good performers.

But like many things in life I stumbled upon exactly what I was looking for while looking for something completely different. So, here we are.

This thing works flawlessly to hook up hard drives but I encountered an issue with the USB ports that was enough to dock a star. The issue was that the ports were too closely spaced and it forced devices to scrape too closely up against the contacts.

This wouldn't be a problem if the contacts were more flush, but unfortunately one of my devices caught enough purchase to push one of the contacts all the way back without me realizing it. This shorted out the port and, upon restart, prevented the system from booting (too much current).

As a result I'm left with one usable port of two, and the second port isn't a whole heck of a lot better off. It still takes too much effort to plug it in and there's still too much pressure on the contacts.

Given the fact that the ports were simply an added bonus on top of the rack's actual functionality, I can't dock it too much. However it is a problem and it does render part of the advertised functionality inoperative, so I can't very well let it slide.

UPDATE: After using this quite a few times since I purchased it to scan for viruses, hard drive errors, lost partitions, and general computer troubleshooting the most used drive bay for me, the 2.5" one, partially broke.
