4.0 out of 5 stars great mexican music
kinky is a great "regiomontana" band who has a very special stile, this album convines electronic beats with very cool funky guitars and latin percussions, its cool that most of the sounds are made by a five men band and not by a dj. A great step for mexican music. If you like electro, funk, latin, batucada, or even rock music, you'll like it

3.0 out of 5 stars Witty and Energetic, But ...
I got this album on the strength of the hit Soun Tha Mi Primer Amour, which is a fun track with a wonderful arrangement of brass, percussion and bass produced with modern flourishes. But if you buy this disc expecting more of the same, you will be disappointed; Soun Tha Mi Primer Amour sounds little like the rest of the disc, which is made up of dance tracks, mostly...

100% recomendable, es un disco muy bien hecho, pura musica pachanguesca muy prendida para bailar tocada por una banda de 5 musicos.Una importante demostracion de la gran creatividad que existe en mexico y de la diversidad musical de monterrey.

5.0 out of 5 stars GROOVE ARMADA MEETS OZOMATLI, February 1, 2003
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Kinky (Audio CD)
Kinky has come out of the gates with a debut album that puts them at the cutting edge of modern music. It's impossible to describe their style in a single word, as they cover so much territory with such aplomb that it defies easy description. Espanol, funk, electronica, folk, rock - they do justice to every lick, beat and rhythm they take on. Shades of Groove Armada, Ozomatli, even Rage Against The Machine, peek out here and there in these totally original, tightly performed and passionately executed songs. Not once does it sound as though they're pandering to the listener; rather, they seem to play whatever they feel best suits the songs, and they appear to have a deep, deep well from which to draw influences and inspiration.
Many of the tunes are almost theatrical in their ability to sound like snippets of TV, movie or commercial backgrounds. Much like Moby did with "Play", and Talking Heads did earlier, Kinky has set a new standard for aural landscapes encapsulated in crisp, short cuts. If there's any justice in the music world (and there rarely is) these five Mexicans will find a welcome audience across all genres and from all ages. Mas!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Kinky is hot, October 28, 2002

Beginning with the first cut "Mas" with it's refrain "vamos queriendo mas y mas" the band sets the table for a delicious treat of Latin rock and electronica. The opening track is like Talking Heads in its heyday transplanted culturally to Monterrey, Mexico circa 2002. The hybrid sound is part nopal beat ala Nortec, groovy dance groove ala Plastilina Mosh and dance throwback disco beats. Add these elements and some, plus modern studio wizardry for quite a remarkable effect. This is a most refreshing sound that defies categorization. The band has a crisp sound with plenty of funk and vocals that complement their use of synthezers. There is something about this band that makes me think they are smart and know exactly what they are doing and having lots of fun in the process. Nearly all of the songs have qualities above and beyond the average dance band, these guys are on to something. With an abundance of catchy tunes one stands out in particularf entitled "Ejercicio #16. " The song has a metallic sounding electronic whip which is followed by a woman crying out in ecstacy after each thrashing. You'd have to hear the aaaaaahhhs and oooohhhhhs to understand the erotic nature of this bit of S&M dance groove . " Anorexic Freaks" gives another glimse into their twisted humor for the dance nation. If you like Venezuela's "Amigos Invisibles" than you'll love this disc as this group is similar but one step beyond. It is just a fun, high energy album that is totally different and unique. It's like neon lights in the rain, looking out through the strobe lights of a metro ride in Mexico City. A fantastic first release from a group that should have a bright future ahead of them. By this now and step into the future and look at the possibilities of Latin grooves to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Bumbershoot Endorsement, September 2, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Kinky (Audio CD)
To reinforce the other Bumbershoot reviews, these guys were a revelation! Inventive, high energy, pure shake-your-booty music, which is why I didn't mind the absence of a strong, lead singer. In fact, for these guys, it is a plus because it doesn't distract from the grooves they are laying down. Yes, the on-site store was SOLD OUT of their CDs the minute the concert was over!! So are others in the area, which helps explain why a bunch of us have stampeded here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable!!!, July 18, 2003

I'm a 15 year African American boy. I listen to everything spanning from rock to chill out. But when I heard the first single to this work of art I was completely hooked. It was so unlike anything I had heard but I liked the mix of hip hop, soul, latin, and rock. It's so original. The beats are nice and the flavor is bangin. Even though I'm a brotha who loves mostly hip hop and r&b, this group has reeled in a fan. If you get this album you will forever be a fan!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great original, February 5, 2004
This review is from: Kinky (Audio CD)
After listening to their disappointing sophomore album, "Atlas", I was compelled to write about how great Kinky's debut effort actually is. This album is all about unabashed creativity, while not trying to target any specific market. The sound is all over the map - you'd like to put it in some neat little category but it won't fit there. It doesn't fit anywhere, and that's what's great about it. Full of energy, with electric guitars, conga drums, electro-beats, the occasional vocoder, goofy Spanish lyrics, it's hard not to get a buzz listening to this CD. Not only do their songs sound like they could be used in commercials, they ARE used in commercials (ie. "Mas" used for the Nissan Altima). I've seen these guys live and they pumped even more energy into their songs than what was on the CD, which is hard to believe, and this made listening to "Atlas" (which I was initially really excited about) all the more disappointing. Regardless, "Kinky" will stay as one my road-trip favorites for a long time to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gotta hear it to believe it., May 26, 2002

I was priviledged enough to meet up with the member's of Kinky when the opened up for deSol, another latin band I do promotions for. I was invited to attend the next show in NYC. Let me tell you this, this may be one of the best CD's I now own..it's a fresh, unique..unbelievable style. The CD alone is just incredible..but if you get a chance to see them live..only a funeral should get in the way of your attendance..their grooves are so infectuous, you will undoubtedly be won over after the first 20 minutes alone.

Not to mention the fact that the sincerity, hospitality & humbleness of the Kinky guys makes them that much more of a great band. They showed me and my friend a great time..my advice is to see them now while you can get a ticket..Thanks Kinky..and John Pantle. You're great people!

..See you in Brooklyn in August..Shawn A.

5.0 out of 5 stars Try something new - try this!, June 1, 2003

When I first got this cd, I was skeptical. I ordered it because someone recommended it to me, and I was pleasantly surprised. I never thought in a million years I would enjoy Mexican techno/rock, but I love this cd! Each song has it's own personality, but they all will have you grooving along. Sambita especially stands out to me with it's infectious harmonies. Do yourself a favor and get this cd!

4.0 out of 5 stars Energetic, Rhymes, and Fun - Kick it w/ Kinky, September 1, 2003

Wen't to Bumbershoot weekend of labor day, which is when I saw Kinky. The band a couple of guys going crazy and blasting out tunes that even got the close by b-boys outside the center spin circle stage breakdancing.

The crowd kept growing which truly is a sign of their enigmatic performance. Everyone was dancing and jumping up. Their sound is a medley of all types. I heard some beasty boys, funk, mexican country in it. Mixed up with their instruments it became an electrafying performance. I'll definetely see them again live if they come in town.

The only thing that was a pet peeve of mine is that they had a lot of instrumental songs where I wished they had a lead singer pumping up the crowd a bit more.

Needless to say that by the time I got to the CD purchase area theirs was sold out.
