Among the most immediately approachable of the composers featured in Marco Polo's series of contemporary Irish music, John Kinsella (b.1932) writes generally tonal, communicative, atmospheric, folk-inspired, somewhat Sibelian music. The third symphony (1990) consists of two main movements (Scherzo and Adagio tranquillo) framed by three very short ones. The brief Prologue introduces a solo bassoon theme that recurs throughout, before launching the dramatic and vigorous but lean, very Irish-sounding and hugely enjoyable, rugged but melodic Scherzo movement. The slow movement (following the short Intermezzo) is generally melancholic and rather captivating, and the work is capped off by a brief Epilogue summing up the material of the previous movements. While it may not be an undisputable masterpiece, it is a very satisfying, delightful work, well constructed and full of good ideas; very well worth hearing.

The substantial (45-minute) fourth (1991) consists of impressions from four Irish provinces (from the perspective of the south-west wind), but although the movements retain some characteristic touches, the overall ideas are subordinated to a more general formal symphonic schema. It is, perhaps, less immediately approachable than its predecessor, but is still brimful of good ideas. The muscular first movement (Munster) is big-boned and colorful and the second (Connacht) warmly serene. Best of all is the Scherzo (Ulster) which very successfully juxtaposes fierce aggression with bleak lyricism. The final movement (Leinster) has a certain epic character, and while it is not the strongest individual movement it draws the symphony together to a powerful close. Another very fine work, in other words.

Beautiful late romantic music from a still-living Irish composer. An amazing "find".
