About the Artist

Carter Burwell has composed the music for the feature films Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, Miller's Crossing, Barton Fink, Rob Roy, Fargo, The Spanish Prisoner, Gods and Monsters, Velvet Goldmine, Three Kings, Being John Malkovich, Before Night Falls, Adaptation, The Ladykillers and The Alamo.

Product Description

This is the score to the film "Kinsey", about the life and work of sex-researcher Alfred Kinsey. The film, written and directed by Bill Condon and starring Liam Neeson as Kinsey and Laura Linney as his wife, puts Kinsey's work in its mid-20th-century and mid-western American context. Carter Burwell's score weaves between Kinsey's life-long interest in nature - its grandeur and its limitless variety - and the intimacy of human sexuality which became his ultimate field of exploration. It's performed by a small ensemble of exceptional musicians, mostly members of the New York Philharmonic.

5.0 out of 5 stars A breathtaking little masterpiece. November 29, 2004
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is a small score, recorded with only a handful of musicians and without the grand, sweeping scale of Burwell's most memorable work like Rob Roy or Conspiracy Theory. However, director Bill Condon has compensated for the film's limited scope by giving Burwell huge swathes of the film to work with. Many of the tracks are five minutes long.

It's rare for a director to trust his composer so much, giving over such sizable chunks of a film to music. The score unites the film beautifully, especially the opening sequence, and the music stands up just as well as an album.

This is not huge, hummable "Star Wars" type film scoring, but lovely, tender romantic music for a deeply human and intellgent film. Every new score by Carter Burwell is cause for celebration and this is no exception.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very moving March 8, 2005
Format:Audio CD
Burwell's music has a sweep and emotional resonance that are much greater than you'd expect from the "small ensemble" of musicians involved. I found the score quite varied and, even aside from the film, to be involving and moving. He takes the opportunity to write music with a human "ache" that he doesn't get a chance to explore in his work with the Coen Brothers or Spike Jonze.
