Most Helpful Customer Reviews

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful By Stephen Midgley on November 10, 2013
Format: Audio CD
The North German baroque composer, Christian Geist (c. 1650-1711) was completely unknown to me until I came across this disc – hence the above review title. Judging from the contents of this lovely programme, however, he was an extremely gifted composer with an outstanding mastery of melody, texture and counterpoint. The disc brings us a finely varied programme of ten sacred cantatas and motets to German or Latin texts, for solo or concerted voices and instruments; they are beautifully and stylishly performed by the Hungarian-based early-music Chamber Ensemble of the Orfeo Orchestra, directed by György Vashegyi.

The programme gets off to a lovely start with “Alleluja – Surrexit pastor bonus” for 5 voices and instruments, a cheerful, spirited work with beautifully crafted contrapuntal passages. Next comes “Beati omnes qui timent Dominum” (track 2), a cantata for solo bass with an equally bouncing, joyful opening. Bass soloist Krisztián Cser takes the solo part beautifully, as he does in several finely written bass parts in other works on the disc, serving to remind us that the composer himself was a bass singer. “Pastores dicite quidnam vidistis” (3) is a short but graceful dialogue motet, and “Altitudo, quid hic jaces” (4) again includes another fine solo bass part, with lovely concerted passages at the repeated refrain “O quam mira perpetrasti ...”. The composer also makes the most of the drama and variety of pace in the text of “Dixit Dominus” (5).

The chorale setting “Vater unser, der du bist im Himmel” (6) receives an especially lovely rendering from soprano Ágnes Pintér; this is one of a group of three works (6-8) of a more solemn, contemplative character.
