When I say that this is a beautiful little catalog of painter Per Kirkeby's 2008 exhibition at Denmark's Lousiana Museum of Modern Art, I mean it literally. It comes as a hardcover, and also cleverly contains a DVD of an interview with the artist. The color plates are beautifully rendered, and there's a lot of chewy critical writing about the show. However, you'll want a magnifying glass, because the book measures 5 and 3/4 inches square by about an inch thick. (About the dimensions of a stack of three CD cases.) I somewhat foolishly assumed "oh, an art book... art books are large enough that the viewer can appreciate the artwork pictured inside." It's already frustrating to look at what are actually five-and-six-foot wide paintings in a format which reduces them to images not even large enough for postcards. I take full responsibility for my own oversight in not reading the product description more closely, and I'll keep this book, but I'm giving a three-star review to the publishers for choosing such a ridiculous format for such large, beautiful work. (At least I only paid thirty bucks; the original price on the shrinkwrap was $40.)
